Ward Churchill backs fragging
Controversial '9-11 prof' suggests rolling grenades under line officers

University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill suggested to a forum on conscientious objection they might be more effective in opposing war if they supported the "fragging" or killing of line officers.

In a Portland meeting on resistance to military recruiting, Churchill, famous for comparing Sept. 11, 2001, victims in the World Trade Center to "little Eichmanns," twice suggested anti-war activists should support those who kill their officers.

"For those of you who do, as a matter of principle, oppose war in any form, the idea of supporting a conscientious objector who's already been inducted in his combat service in Iraq might have a certain appeal," he said. "But let me ask you this: Would you render the same support to someone who hadn't conscientiously objected, but rather instead rolled a grenade under their line officer in order to neutralize the combat capacity of their unit?"

Later, in a question-and-answer period, Churchill was asked whether the trauma "fragging" inflicts on that officer's family back home should be considered, he responded: "How do you feel about Adolf Eichmann's family?"

3. Headline misrepresents Churchill's words
-- at least if they are quoting him correctly.

There's a big difference between asking the question "Would you render the same support," and saying that you should render the same support.

4. World Net Daily? Why not.
Hey, let's just go string him up. Get up a posse and git' him. Why haven't they enlisted the Swift Boat Vets?

This is NOT the Freeper Zone. Not yet.

5. A stupid thing to say
What makes him think that all soldiers who frag their officers are against the war? They could just have a beef with their CO. They could just have a personality conflict. A fragging may have nothing to do with politics. Then what would his response be?

7. You should look into what World Net Daily is.
It will take you a while but you'll see it has its own spin for any news story, like News Max.

6. His job is to bring forth
controversy, this gets ideas and discussion going in the forums he has, I don't think 99% of the things he says are how he feels, he wants to remind people, he (and they) still have the right to say them.

11. He sure likes to throw bombs.
I suppose it is futile to point out that he advocates nothing in the quoted text, he asked provocative questions, which is what professors are supposed to do, try to get you to think. He wants them to think about where their boundaries are. The bit at the end about "Little Entenmans" indicates his rhetorical stance well enough.

13. WorldNetDaily - this is bound to be a misquote
Or a quote taken out of context. I will wait for a summation from a reputable source before drawing any conclusions.

14. Looks like lying WND has written a piece of slander, with a tailhook ..
.. designed so that they can claim, if necessary, they were simply being satiric: "He did not intend to suggest the 9-11 victims were 'little Eichmanns' he claims now. Instead, he blamed the grammar checker for changing what he says he actually wrote: 'little Entenmanns' -- referring to the brand of pastries."

I don't think this is news: I think it's crap.

16. What would anyone think of the idea that this guy is being paid to say....
...stuff like this? What better way to discredit the people who believe that 911 was LIHOP or MIHOP, as well as those who are against the Iraq invasion and occupation?

Any thoughts?
