Allawi Discusses Syria Border Militants (not backed by Syrian Gov't)
CAIRO, Egypt - The militants crossing into Iraq from Syria are not backed by the Syrian government, Iraq's former interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said Monday.

Allawi, who headed the Iraqi government from June 2004 until April, came to Cairo to raise support for his plan to hold a pan-Iraqi conference to end the insurgency.

"The answer to the tension in Iraq cannot be through a military solution or by force alone," Allawi said after talks with President Hosni Mubarak.

Last week, the United States and Iraq reiterated that Syria was not doing enough to stop foreign fighters from entering Iraq. The Syrian government rejected the allegations, arguing it is impossible to seal its 360-mile border with Iraq.

1. Damascus not backing militants: Allawi
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — The militants crossing into Iraq from Syria are not backed by the Syrian government, Iraq’s former interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said Monday.

Allawi, who headed the Iraqi government from June 2004 until April, came to Cairo to raise support for his plan to hold a pan-Iraqi conference to end the insurgency.

There are infiltrators,” Allawi said Monday, “but that does not necessarily mean that they are supported by the Syrian government. “(The infiltrators) are misusing Syria’s hospitality and cross into Iraq.”

Allawi said Syrian and Iraqi officials were discussing setting up a buffer zone along the border to stop infiltration.

3. BS
secure the border. 2 years ago.

syria may not be issuing marching orders, but they ain't doing much to stop the jihadis, and if i were a baathist sunni dictatorship, i'd probably be doing the same thing.

6' electrified barbed wire with guard towers every 500 yds from the jordanian to the turkish border. how much can that cost? 8 billion? we paid that much in bribes last month.

of course, it make the whole country a gulag, and makes our troops gulag guards. and there is the catch. we cannot stabilize iraq and retain our souls.

4. Allawi has been getting support and aid from Arab
governments around the Middle East for the election in December, he hopes to make a coalition with the Sunnis (who will vote this time), the Kurds, and the secular Shia.

Allawi and Assad also have proposed to the UN to make UN staffed buffer between Iraq and Syria.
