Booby-trapped dog explodes in Iraq
A booby-trapped dog targeting a police patrol exploded in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk Sunday, injuring one police office, police said.

Sources in the oil-rich city said the dog was apparently drugged and blew up as a police patrol was passing on a main road in eastern Kirkuk.

Insurgents have previously used animals pulling carts in targeted attacks against the U.S.-led forces in the country as well as human suicide bombings.

The sources said another police patrol was targeted in the same area just two minutes after the dog exploded, injuring two officers.

20. NOW they are? Because a fucking dog was killed?
Just when I thought I'd heard it all, nevermind the countless civilians dead - one stinking mutt gets sent to pieces and this is what gets you upset?

25. Being pissed about one thing doesn't erase the other things.
That's too black and white in your thinking. The posters, and myself, are animal lovers. They are responding to using an unwitting animal to blow up as opposed to one of the insurgents doing it to themselves. It does NOT erase our feelings of horror that they are killing people with the bombs.. but rather it compounds it, as they are using a trusting animal to do it. The anger does not cancel the other anger out.. it just intensifies it.

A stray dog feeds on an Iraqi corpse. Marines are now hunting down stray animals grown fat on the flesh from corpses and which could harbor rabies Photo AFP/Cris Bouroncle.

DOGS ARE NOT CUDDLY TO THESE PEOPLE OR MARINES

THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT VIEW OF DOGS. THE MARINES SHOOT AND KILL A LOT OF DOGS.

FALLUJAH, Iraq - US troops fire off another volley of shots amid the trashed houses of Fallujah, hunting down new adversaries carrying a potentially deadly weapon that threatens to plague reconstruction efforts.

"I think we wounded a couple and they took off that way," he said, as another marine pulled his quarry onto a ridge, its bloodied head rolling side to side in the dust.

As their numbers have swelled, so has the risk the animals pose to the tens of thousands of people expected to return to Fallujah in the coming weeks. The marines have been told to organize special details to "thin out" the battered city's animal population

2. Okay, shooting at other humans, is bad enough, but at least one
could say "self-defense". But poor animals who cannot defend themselves? That's really sick!

US soldier kills rare tiger
20/09/2003 18:26 - (SA)

Bagdad - An American soldier shot and killed a rare Bengal tiger in Baghdad zoo during an apparently drunken party, the head of the zoo said on Saturday.

"The soldiers arrived in the evening with food and beer, accompanied by a group of Iraqi police officers," Adel Salman Musa said of the incident on Thursday night.

"One of the soldiers, who the Iraqi police said had drunk a lot, went into the cage against the advice of his colleagues and tried to feed the animal, who severely hurt his arm," he explained to AFP.

The tiger tore off one of the soldier's fingers and mauled his arm. One of the other soldiers immediately fired at the animal and killed it, he said.

"The soldiers don't have the right to behave like that. That was the most precious and valuable animal in the whole zoo. It was 14 years old and had been born here," Salman Musa said.

15. or this one?
"By 1972, the US Navy had deployed a top-secret team of "warrior porpoises" in Vietnam, part of its "Swimmer Nullification Program", yet another Orwellian code name for killing. For at least a year, these experimental dolphins were utilised to protect strategic Vietnamese harbours against infiltration by enemy frogmen. According to Dr. James Fitzgerald, pioneer in dolphin research for the CIA and US Navy, after detecting an intruding diver, the animals were trained to pull off his face mask and flippers, tear the air-supply tubes, and finally "capture him for interrogation." In fact the dolphins serving in Vietnam seem to have been considerably less benign. Indeed, it was the increasingly sordid exploitation of cetaceans by the US military which began to provoke repulsion amongst its own dolphin trainers. Several resigned in disgust, and experienced few qualms about betraying at least some of the military's secrets to the public. According to Dr. Michael Greenwood, the Navy's dolphins had also been taught to kill, with knives attached to their flippers and snouts. Worse was to come however, when dolphins were equipped with large hypodermic syringes loaded with pressurised carbon dioxide. As the dolphin rammed an enemy frogman with the needle, the rapidly expanding gas would cause the victim to literally explode. Years later, it was revealed that the killer dolphins of Vietnam had actually been responsible for the deaths of 40 Vietcong divers, and accidentally, two American servicemen."

What kind of idiot would go into a cage and try to feed a tiger? A drunken one. Of course, they have to kill the tiger.

7. this one really pisses me off . . .
and, as a dog lover, breaks my heart . . . using fanatics who choose to blow themselves up is one thing . . . using helpless and trusting canines is something else altogether . . . maybe some things ARE deserving of the death penalty . . . as in strapping explosives to the people who did this and blowing THEM up . . . fuckers! . . .

9. Dogs are routinely used in military research, I believe
To test weapons, medical techniques, etc. That includes the U.S. military. Unfortunately, the use of dogs and other animals in warfare is nothing new. The phrase "dogs of war" is not just a metaphor.

Not to defend it, but this is nothing new, and certainly not unique to the "insurgents".

22. our own soldiers kill dogs too
For some reason humans always have to drag animals into human wars. They test bombs on pigs by blowing them up inside trucks, use chickens to find landmines, etc. I think it's all part of the might makes right attitude.

Here they are using them for target practice:

http://usmilitarykillsdogs.allsupportgroup.info/

here they are using goats to practice medical techniques

http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0908-04.htm

and here they are shooting dogs on sight to contain the spread of disease, because 1) they can't stop creating dead bodies, and 2) they don't clean up the dead bodies they create

http://www3.turkishpress.com/w.asp?s=i&i=041210033510.1bgx7r1p

and here are soldiers BEGGING for food for our DEPLOYED dogs (who obviously never signed a form to join the army). with the budget for this war, here's more "equipment" they can't take care of:

http://www.thecarolinachannel.com/news/4050813/detail.html?treets=gs&tid=2655332288813&tml=gs_4pm&tmi=gs_4pm_1_03000301052005&ts=H

However, as in any organization, some of the soldiers are humane:

23. Dogs of War
Pink Floyd:

Dogs of war and men of hate
With no cause, we don't discriminate
Discovery is to be disowned
Our currency is flesh and bone
Hell opened up and put on sale
Gather 'round and haggle
For hard cash, we will lie and deceive
Even our masters don't know the web we weave
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
Invisible transfers, long distance calls,
Hollow laughter in marble halls
Steps have been taken, a silent uproar
Has unleashed the dogs of war
You can't stop what has begun
Signed, sealed, they deliver oblivion
We all have a dark side, to say the least
And dealing in death is the nature of the beast
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
The dogs of war don't negotiate
The dogs of war won't capitulate,
They will take and you will give,
And you must die so that they may live
You can knock at any door,
But wherever you go, you know they've been there before
Well winners can lose and things can get strained
But whatever you change, you know the dogs remain.
One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world
