Hayes: Guantanamo conditions significantly better than have to be

By TIM WHITMIRE
Associated Press Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Returning from a one-day visit to the military prison in Cuba where suspected terrorists are being held, U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes said Monday that complaints about abuse at the prison are the work of people determined to "blame America first."

The Republican congressman from Concord said his Eighth Congressional District constituents would probably be upset if they saw how well the detainees at Guantanamo live.

"The most astounding thing to me was how nice the prisoners are being treated," Hayes told reporters during a news conference on the campus of Central Piedmont Community College." These folks are getting privileges that a prisoner of war under the terms of the Geneva Convention would not get."

Hayes was part of a delegation of 16 House members _ many of them members of the Armed Services Committee _ who went to Cuba on Saturday for a firsthand look at the prison at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

3. The most astounding thing to me is how persecuted Republicans manage
to sound -

"...the work of people determined to "blame America first." "

Gimme a fucking break, dude. The only people I see hating anything are the chickenhawk warmongers and haters of democracy who think it is okay to hold people WITHOUT CHARGES indefinitely.

We LOVE America and that is why we are working so damn hard to get it back on track.

5. I'm not sure what he expects us to make of those statements.
His group went for a carefully controlled tour of the prison. Of course they didn't see torture while they were there. Everyone was on his/her best behavior. To extrapolate from that and say that those prisoners are being treated better than they would under the Geneva Conventions is ridiculous.

8. Robin Hayes is just another repug clone...
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 12:46 PM by youspeakmylanguage
He tried to run for NC Governor years ago as a extreme fundie loon and lost resoundingly. Now he represents a district with part of Charlotte included. Unfortunately the people there keep re-electing him even though he voted to send textile jobs overseas. The fundie repugs in NC are just as ignorant, if not more so, than anywhere else.

EDIT: F***! The SOB is the representative of my district!

I voted a straight Dem ticket, so at least I tried to run him out of office...

9. Please get it right, Mr. Hayes
I don't blame America first; I blame Republicans first, last and always. The obscenity that is the Guantanamo gulag is from beginning to end a Republican operation, founded, maintained and continued only through the auspices of a morally bankrupt political party bent on achieving the chimera of world domination through indiscriminate military force, deceit and subterfuge.

But I personally will advocate that you be served a nice chicken dinner before the people you've victimized line you up against a wall for summary execution. I know that will be a great comfort to you.

have such a strong record of telling the truth and of never fixing evidence to get their way.

20. Theresienstadt comes to mind... a concentration camp meant to
show how well the Jews lived under the "benevolent" protection of the Third Reich.

Problem is, there are many secret Gitmos around the planet.

27. Has ANY media mentioned
that this sideshow is completely worthless?? Since when do we accept that there is no problem because the people supposedly responsible have prepared for and given a closely guarded "tour" of the problem.

So if I understand correctly:

-Major abuses and torture happen at Gitmo systematically.
-News of it begins to flood the mainstream media.
-Government decides to give select few in congress a controlled tour of Gitmo
-They go and don't see any torture or abuse while they are there, and are shown how nice the conditions are for the prisoners.
-They are placated and come and tell us how nice things are there, not to worry.

FUCK THEM. I hate when people think that we are soooo stupid that we can't put 1+1=2 together.

Well, the senators went there and didn't see any abuse huh?? NO SHIT!

I haven't heard one anchor ask if this is supposed to prove anything and what the real WORTH of this trip is?

Am i REALLY supposed to believe that all is OK there now.?

GRRRRRRRRRR
