Bush to meet with families of troops killed in conflicts
6/28/2005 2:16 PM
By: The Associated Press

President Bush will be meeting with the families of some US troops killed in Iraq or Afghanistan ahead of his address on Iraq this evening.

White House officials said Bush will meet with the families of 33 troops. He'll then make his address before as many as 700 soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Bush is trying to ease Americans' growing doubts about the Iraq mission and the violence that has claimed the lives of more than 1,700 US troops.

But war opponents plan to protest outside the base.

A spokesman for the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition said there's a "groundswell" against the war.

1. I trust they have been carefully screened to avoid any anti-war types
that wonder why their family members have died for a lie. Have to find the ignorant. Just wish that once, just once, a family would try to present that meme and then slam him on national television. That would be great.

8. He'd never meet with any families on live TV
Rove knows better. They may roll some videotape but there is too much risk of exactly what you described.

Truly pathetic.

3. Why doesn't he meet with Esther Macklin and tell her why
the Army dropped manslaughter charges against the soldier, whose "horseplay", killed her son? Tell her why they lied about his death for a year.

Why doesn't he meet with family members who don't support him or his war?

Other than the fact that he's a coward, that is....

9. Geez, this couldn't be more disgusting....
using the families of the fallen only when it is expedient to do so but NEVER let the American public know they are honored by being there when their bodies are returned in the middle of the night.

I can only hope the American public are as disgusted with this obscenely obvious ploy.

18. Picky me. They weren't killed in a conflict. They were killed in wars
Two of 'em: Afghanistan and Iraq. Iraq is a quagmire and China is going to relieve us of our oil success in Afghanistan. (They are going to kick neoCon butt in the Great Game.)

A conflict is like, "should I go to the movies or stay home? Should I wear the red shoes or the blue..."

with the soldier in tow. He needs to see what these families are up against, for the rest of their lives.

Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 02:37 PM by Straight Shooter
He's looking for some touchy-feely sound bites that he can include in his speech. Yes, the families will be screened, definitely, and there will be much talk of "my child died serving our great country, and for the spread of freedom." He'll shed a few crocodile tears, hug a few grieving mothers, fathers, widows, widowers, and half-orphans.

It's really nauseating how he uses anybody and everybody to further his agenda and prop himself up.

edit to include fathers and widowers, this is a war that's killing many men and women in the Armed Forces (as all wars do, of course)

28. He's actually like most bullies--an extreme coward in person
I used to know some cops that worked around him as security when he was governor. He's unbelievably cowardly in person, and terrified of death. What was he comment about 9-11? He said once that his first thought was "self-preservation." Not his children, not his wife, not his country (the correct order for a decent person, I think)--himself.

He's a piece of garbage in every way, politically and personally.
