Bush: Bloodshed in Iraq Is 'Worth It'

By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer
5 minutes ago

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - President Bush on Tuesday appealed for the nation's patience for "difficult and dangerous" work ahead in Iraq, hoping a backdrop of U.S. troops and a reminder of Iraq's revived sovereignty would help him reclaim control of an issue that has eroded his popularity.

In an evening address at an Army base that has 9,300 troops in Iraq, Bush was acknowledging the toll of the 27-month-old war. At the same time, he aimed to persuade skeptical Americans that his strategy for victory needed only time — not any changes — to be successful.

"Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed. Every picture is horrifying and the suffering is real," Bush said, according to excerpts released ahead of time by the White House. "It is worth it."

It was a tricky balancing act, believed necessary by White House advisers who have seen persistent insurgent attacks eat into Americans' support for the war — and for the president — and increase discomfort among even Republicans on Capitol Hill.

1. Yep 1,750 dead American troops, 11,000 seriously wounded
....over 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children killed and at least 23,400 insurgents still active in Iraq. It's all been worth it, eh? Oh, and the war cost so far $370 billion and the war is to continue for at least another 12 years at $150 billion per year.

Do we know how many barrels of oil BushCo has looted from Iraq?

6. War injured toll soars, hits veterans health costs(VA needs $2.6 billion)
The Veterans Administration assumed it would have to take care of 23,553 patients who are veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but that number had been revised upward to 103,000, Nicholson told a House of Representatives panel.

Nicholson told a House Appropriations subcommittee that his agency's estimate of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in need of health care services was now four times greater than thought.

10. It's worth it, George? I suppose you mean politically.
You're a coward, President Bush. You're a coward now, you've been a coward in the past and nothing you can say tonight.....nothing..... will change the fact that you will be a coward in the future.
The reason I know this for sure is that your lack of caring for those fighting your war, in many cases unprotected, has been demonstrated time and again by not providing the number of troops necessary to "win" the war, the body armor and vehicle armor necessary to keep those that are fighting safe and your despicable $1 billion dollar cut in Veteran's Administration funding to add to the misery of those returning from war damaged physically and mentally.
Yes, you are a despicable coward of the worst sort.

Just like the tax cuts were worth it, and SS piratization is worth it.

And labor unionization and minimum wage is not worth it.

Twelve more years would suit Halliburton just fine, and would be "$worth$" it.

$80, $100 per barrel would suit Exxon-Mobil just fine, and would be "$worth$" it.

19. another snip from AFP...* will tie in 9/11 with Iraq
Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country. And tonight I will explain the reasons why," he said.

"We have more work to do, and there will be tough moments that test America's resolve. We are fighting against men with blind hatred -- and armed with lethal weapons -- who are capable of any atrocity," he said.

"They are trying to shake our will in Iraq -- just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail. The terrorists do not understand America. The American people do not falter under threat -- and we will not allow our future to be determined by car bombers and assassins," he said.

...< Imaginable resistance "speech" (translated in English) >...

"They are trying to shake our will in Iraq -- just as they tried to shake our will on March 19, 2003. They will fail. The invaders do not understand Iraq. The Iraqui people do not falter under threat -- and we will not allow our future to be determined by airplane bombers and assassins," he said.

When will the misleaders learn?

52. In a big way
here's some quotes from CNN:

"The terrorists can kill the innocent, but they cannot stop the advance of freedom," Bush will say. "The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September 11 ... if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like (Abu Musab al-) Zarqawi ... and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like (Osama) bin Laden."

"We are fighting against men with blind hatred, and armed with lethal weapons, who are capable of any atrocity," Bush will say. "They wear no uniform. They respect no laws of warfare or morality. They are trying to shake our will in Iraq, just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail."

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/06/28/bush.speech/index.html

'They'? 'They' all died in the planes. The planners aremeant to have been captured. The people that Bush has sent as cannon fodder to Iraq face a whole new set of people, most of them motivated by Bush's illegal invasion.

37. Is Rove slipping???
I know *'s speeches are typically very 'organized' in terms of using keywords and manipulating language; but anyone else feel that "It was worth it." was some sort of sign that Rove is running out of steam?

Seems like after hearing that now when people look at the graphic images, the torture pictures/videos or hear about the deaths that are occurring daily that they'll be asking "Was it worth it?"

Up until now, the "It was worth it." saying was kind an unspoken understood for those on the right; but now that it has been verbalized it might start becoming less and less justifiable. Just seems like it will prompt more and more people to start questioning the war and *'s motives.

41. Madeleine Albright committed a similar gaff re Iraq embargo
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 06:05 PM by teryang
When asked about the loss of life alleged to have been a consequence of the Iraq embargo, she stated, "we think its worth it" or words to that effect. Those words painted her and the embargo in a poor light.

This gaff from Bush is more of the same. The life of your child, "it's worth it." Worth what? Some bullshit propagandists jingo. Iraq will never be the bullshit image they are projecting. How can a fantasy with no connection to reality be worth it?

If its the only thing holding together the political alliance that put itself in power through a coup d'etat, it's worth it to them. The purpose was to change the nation's priorities by changing the destination of the national revenues. From public purpose to private accounts. Don't they love it when a plan comes together? The national money river ends in their pockets. Defense contractors, bankers, drug companies, big corporate, and on and on.

For her, half a million dead Iraqi children as a result of the sanctions imposed on Iraq was worth it. Look where that led, and that didn't involve American lives. I believe Albright regretted that comment, but our leader never recalls mistakes and thus regrets nothing.

On second thought, maybe he's having an MA moment in reverse.

Asked about previews of Bush's upcoming speech tries to pretend that they didn't see much. (We all know that they are hand out highlights they want echoed to prepare the public for the upcoming propaganda).

They are really sounding very, very down. A good indication that they know that this speech is going to be so disappointing that even they will not be able to give it a positive spin. and these are a couple of the most professional enablers of this admin.

Now trying to convince people that all the death and destruction is worth it because now they have more phones and nearly as many satellite dishes in Iraq.

And so unnecessary.

56. The problem with Bush, is that
he's not inspiring. He can open his mouth and say whatever he wants. He can swipe his fist in the air and have spit flying out of his mouth, and be as dramatic as he wants to.

The fact is that Bush has never had to struggle for anything, never had a dicey day in his life, other than issues cropping up like worms out of the ground, on his past misdeeds which never seem to leave him.

Bush is not able to inspire people. He's a phony, a hologram of a "president". No one believes him when he says he "suffers like everybody else" because we all know it's not true.

That's why his speech will fail. In fact, I expect him to piss more people off than before.

Bush: Bloodshed in Iraq is 'worth it'

JENNIFER LOVEN

Associated Press

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - President Bush on Tuesday appealed for the nation's patience for "difficult and dangerous" work ahead in Iraq, hoping a backdrop of U.S. troops and a reminder of Iraq's revived sovereignty would help him reclaim control of an issue that has eroded his popularity.

In an evening address at an Army base that has 9,300 troops in Iraq, Bush was acknowledging the toll of the 27-month-old war. At the same time, he aimed to persuade skeptical Americans that his strategy for victory needed only time - not any changes - to be successful.

"Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed. Every picture is horrifying and the suffering is real," Bush said, according to excerpts released ahead of time by the White House.
"It is worth it."

65. "Worth it"
About the silliest thing he can say. Poll show that the huge majority of 'Murikans don't think the war is "worth it." He might convince people we can't leave now. And they seem to swallow "freedom on the march" without questioning. But "worth it" is a huge loser for him, imho.

It's the same old shit!

Other people (working class) labor and he and his wealthy cronies ("ownership" class) collect the profits.

Other people die (war and health care) and he and his wealthy cronies collect the profits.

It's corporate COLONIALISM.

GOP = Gouging Other People, Getting Our Profits!

77. War is hell
Compare Bush's cavalier attitude to war to Abraham Lincoln who genuinely suffered with the growing casualty lists. At City Point, when Grant and Sherman said there could be a final bloody battle to decide the Civil War, Lincoln said something to the point of "My God, is there another way?" Can you picture Bush saying anything like that?

80. Bush Asks for Nation's Patience on Iraq

FORT BRAGG, N.C. - President Bush on Tuesday appealed for the nation's patience for difficult and dangerous work ahead in Iraq, rejecting calls either for a timetable for withdrawal or sending more troops to battle the enemy.

"Sending more Americans would undermine our strategy of encouraging Iraqis to take the lead in this fight," Bush said. "And sending more Americans would suggest that we intend to stay forever."

He also said Iraqis must be reassured that "America will not leave before the job is done."

In an evening address from an Army base that has 9,300 troops in Iraq, Bush acknowledged the toll of the 27-month-old war. At the same time, he aimed to convince skeptical Americans that his "clear path forward" to victory needs only time — not any changes — to be successful.

"Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed. Every picture is horrifying and the suffering is real," Bush said.
