Text of President Bush's Speech
The Associated Press
Published: Jun 28, 2005

Text of President Bush's speech Tuesday night at Fort Bragg, N.C., as provided by the White House:
Thank you and good evening. I am pleased to visit Fort Bragg, home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces. It is an honor to speak before you tonight.

My greatest responsibility as president is to protect the American people, and that is your calling as well. I thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice. I thank your families, who support you in your vital work. The soldiers and families of Fort Bragg have contributed mightily to our efforts to secure our country and promote peace. America is grateful and so is your commander in chief.

The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror. This war reached our shores on September 11, 2001. The terrorists who attacked us and the terrorists we face murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent. Their aim is to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of tyranny and oppression by toppling governments, driving us out of the region and exporting terror.

To achieve these aims, they have continued to kill in Madrid, Istanbul, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Bali and elsewhere. The terrorists believe that free societies are essentially corrupt and decadent, and with a few hard blows they can force us to retreat. They are mistaken. After September 11, I made a commitment to the American people: This nation will not wait to be attacked again. We will take the fight to the enemy. We will defend our freedom.

America <33%> is grateful and so is your commander in chief.

The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror <"which will never end, hehe">. This war reached our shores on September 11, 2001 <"Afterwards we went after the enimies: the French the liberals and anybody else that disagreed with me.">. The terrorists who attacked us and the terrorists we face murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent <"Yes, I AM making a 9-11/Saddam connection">. Their aim is to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of tyranny and oppression <"the same thing I've done here."> by toppling governments, driving us out of the region and exporting terror.

To achieve these aims, they have continued to kill in Madrid, Istanbul, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Bali and elsewhere {"Dammit, I forgot Poland..."]. The terrorists believe that free societies are essentially corrupt and decadent, and with a few hard blows they can force us to retreat. They are mistaken. After September 11, I made a commitment to the American people: <"I will go after the wrong people and let the head-mastermind go."> This nation will not wait to be attacked again <"In fact I WANT another attack just to ensure I'm doing the right thing.">. 6. This is the part we need to pay attention to:
"And we fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens, and Iraq is where they are making their stand. So we will fight them there, we will fight them across the world and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won."

and i'll repeat it:

"we will fight them across the world and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won"

"we will fight them across the world and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won"

"we will fight them across the world and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won"

"across the world"

"across the world"

11. Damn, now we need inspectors
to search for "references to weapons of mass destruction related programs". I know they must exist somewhere - my source 'Goofball' tells me the President made a joke about them once. The President deployed those references on his own people before, you know, and we haven't had sufficient proof that his stocks of rumour, fear and bullshit have been completely exhausted.

Fact Sheet: Facts, Quotes From President's Address

POSTED: 9:06 pm EDT June 28, 2005

BASICS

WHERE: Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
LENGTH: About 29 minutes.
APPLAUSE: The speech was interrupted once with applause. Soldiers also clapped at the end.

SUMMARY

Bush said the U.S. must stay the course in Iraq as a critical part of the war on terror.
He said he wants U.S. forces to come home as soon as possible.
But Bush said setting a deadline for withdrawing troops would be a mistake.
He said enemies would then know they could wait out the U.S.
SEPT. 11: Bush mentioned "September Eleventh" 5 (five) separate times.*
TERROR: Bush mentioned "terror", "terrorism" or "terrorists" 35 times.*
IRAQ: Bush mentioned "Iraq" or "Iraqis" more than 100 times.*
* according to written copy provided by White House.

IRAQ VIOLENCE

Bush said "ruthless killers" are converging on Iraq.
He said Iraq is where terrorists are making their stand.
He said the U.S. has captured killed or captured foreign fighters -- from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and other nations.
Bush mentioned three examples of terror in Iraq: car bombs in shopping areas, a suicide bombing outside a hospital and beheading of hostages.

....

QUOTES

"My greatest responsibility as president is to protect the American people."
"There is only one course of action against them (terrorists): to defeat them abroad before they attack us at home."
"I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country."
"The lesson of this experience is clear: The terrorists can kill the innocent but they cannot stop the advance of freedom."
"The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September 11."
"They are trying to shake our will in Iraq just as they tried to shake our will on September 11, 2001. They will fail."
"We fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens and Iraq is where they are making their stand."

18. "Bush said "ruthless killers" are converging on Iraq."
Bush is saying presenting unlimited US troops as targets in Iraq attracts terrorists from all over to Iraq, thereby keeping Americans elsewhere safe.

What a terribly fucked-up administration to use that logic. It's truly the end for them.

39. I sort of doubt
this wonderful terrorist magnet we have created is just limited to Iraq.

Whether or not you want to believe it, these terorists are not just in Iraq. There are no terrorist rules that are being followed requiring that they have to do what we think the should be doing i.e. just go to Iraq. It may be in GW's playbook but I don't think the terorists give a rat's ass about what Dubya wants. Global terrorism is up if you have been paying attention at all.

Oh yeah, take a look at the recent Iranian elections if you want to see an example of how the Bush Doctrine is working so well in the mid-east. Real domino theory at work there. Freedom on the march.:sarcasm:

Still, maybe it really isn't so bad. Iran just elected a fundie conservative zealot who babbles on about freedom. Sound familiar?

43. What does this quote mean?
"The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of September 11."

What are the lessons of September 11?

So far, the lessons seems to be:

that you can ignore dire warnings of a terrorist attack and not be held accountable after the attack occurs

that you can exploit this disaster to your political advantage by smearing your opponents as unpatriotic

that you can manipulate the public's fear and ignorance to pull a bait-and-switch and invade a country that had nothing to do with the attacks

that you can lie through your teeth about the reasons for the invasion and not face impeachment if your party controls congress

that your lies and incompetence can drain the nation's treasury and the lives of our troops while creating a training ground for terrorists -- and still not be held accountable

that you can plunge the nation into an open-ended state of perpetual war in which, as a war-time president, you can trample on the bill of rights and engage in torture

that you can to continue to
disassemble and catapult the propaganda without being run out of town on a rail because the corporate media assists in the dissembling propaganda

AND THAT you can go television and talk about
the lessons of September 11 and be confident that half the public HASN'T A FUCKING CLUE what those lessons are

kill all you want, more will show up. For every person you kill, or is killed, or has someone killed, or a home destroyed, more enemies are made. How to stop making new "terrorists"/enemies, people who hate the freedoms we bring (:sarcasm:), is stop killing, stop oppressing, just stop.

25. And then what happens?
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:56 PM by Ariana Celeste
Our soldiers would no longer be risking their lives, losing their lives, OR getting wounded for a pack of lies.
Civilians will no longer be needlessly killed by our troops.
"Suicide bombers" will no longer have troops to try to kill along with themselves. Surely there will still be some suicide bombers, but much less than there is now, therefore, (gasp) less civilian death.
The Iraqi people can rebuild *themselves* rather than seeing American citizens doing it. I guarantee they would be a helluva lot more happy about rebuilding on their own than watching our people do it.

They would have some problems, but there would be fewer problems than there are with our people out there.

I support our troops, they are doing their jobs. But what this Administration has forced them to do is more than shameful, it is disgusting.

20. if the terrorists want to attack our country......
"We fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens and Iraq is where they are making their stand."

Gee if those nasty terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens, I find it odd that they chose Iraq to make their stand. Good thing we figured out that was where they were making their stand so we could destroy the country with our bombs and missiles before they took over and headed toward the US. I wonder where they are going to make their next stand. I have a hunch they are planning to attack our country and kill our citizens over in Iran next. We just have to stay one step ahead of those pesky terrorists. Good thing we have an administration that isn't afraid to illegally invade a country to protect us.

We did find some terrorists living peacefully in Lodi, California recently. Damn good thing we have a fantastic governor that can mysteriously reason with GW. I guess the really great men think alike. If wasn't for Arnold, The US might be bombing Lodi this very minute. I mean, hey, they must deserve it, they were harboring terrorists. Isn't that why we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Lodi is damn lucky we have the Terminator on our side here in California.

I realize that we had to give up most of our civil rights for the awesome protection we are getting, but it is worth it, America hasn't been attacked in our country since 9/11. It is worth the impending inflation, giving up democracy for fascism was a smart idea.

I wonder if they have searched Lodi of Osama yet. I think he could be in that area, running his own 7-11.

When bush uses that expression I get hostile. Sounds like he is our father and he is trying to protect us. BS. Save us from our protector.

Him stating for the umpteenth time that we are fighting them over there so they don't fight us here is also insulting our intelligence. The terrorist are sharpening their skills over there so they can better terrorize us and the world. Did anyone see Amy Goodman on Aaron Brown tonight? She was great and saw the fallacy of Bush's constant contention about Iraq, attacking terrorist there instead of here. A. Brown really disappointed me when he interrupted her while she was making one of her excellent points. He really showed his colors, first time I've ever seen him interrupt someone he was interviewing, at least in that manner.

48. What was the "Stand up, step out" crap?
I didn't watch, just heard Bush** said something like, "When the Iraqis stand up, we'll step out." If this means what I think it means, it's just another Catch-22 from the Neocon administration. Because the Iraqis ARE asking us to leave...politely and not so politely. Unfortunately, the Iraq government answers to BushCo, not to the Iraqis. So we won't hear "You can leave now, thanks" from Iraq until you give Jaffari the a-okay.

Bush** is such a lying prick.

49. They're "making their stand"? U.S. is holed up under their attacks!
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 06:40 AM by confludemocrat
We're looking like Custer over there, they're on the offensive! We are being targeted by locals and some highly effective operatives, a deadly mix of resistance that doesn't bode well for any success there of the kind the U.S. seeks: a compliant state under an ultra- capitalist ultra-free market experiment.

56. " in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom..."
"...in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent."

OK, I'm confused. Is he talking about the ReTHUGlican-controlled House of Representatives here?

"goo-gah freedom"...
