Board said to OK Iraq detainees' release

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) — More than 2,700 detainees captured in Iraq have been approved for release since a review board was created nearly a year ago, while 6,500 have been recommended to remain jailed, a U.S. military official said Tuesday.

The Combined Review and Release Board was formed in August 2004 to handle the cases of suspected insurgents captured in operations conducted by U.S. and Iraqi forces.

Since it began operation, the review board has examined 14,551 detainee files and meets three to four times a week, said Army Lt. Col. Guy Rudisill, a spokesman for detention operations.

The board has approved the release of 2,717 detainees, 5,324 for release to guarantors in their communities and 6,510 for continued imprisonment, Rudisill said.
