Taking Aim At Soros Is Hardly Politic
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/28/AR2005062801511.html

Some Republican lawmakers don't think George Soros should be permitted to purchase a Major League Baseball team because he's too liberal and he has some wacky notions. I must have been napping, and that's why I missed the part where we became a country in which Democrats are no longer allowed to buy things.

<snip>

That's exactly what some Republicans on Capitol Hill are suggesting, led by Tom Davis, the Republican from Virginia who is trying to steer the sale of the Nationals and who says Soros is just not the kind of person "we need or want in the nation's capital."

2. So it's now illegal to buy things if they don't like your politics?
Edited on Wed Jun-29-05 03:37 AM by Lone_Wolf_Moderate
Look, Soros is pretty left-wing, much moreso than a moderate like myself, but so what? Rupert Murdoch is as far-right as they come, and he owns a media empire.

6. ah - cover = politics.... really doing a favor (intim) for a repub
fundraiser who wants to buy the team.

Idiots - just when the public is getting weary of the politicization of things completely nonpolitical this nutjob uses that very theme to do a DeLay for Abramoff thing - that is get the money / protect the money source for buddy.

But in this case the public is just getting to know/see (and will grow weary) of the extent of pay for play govt republican style.

I predict this story goes away... like yesterday. But almost hope that it doesn't because it leaves a bad public impression from both the public bullying and reason given (to public - dems shouldn't be able to invest or make money on said investments due to political beliefs is the subtle message) - or the real reason (political fundraiser buddy wants to buy the team - this is too tip the scales ala "too much controversy" in the MLB).

7. I Think This Would Go Away Quickly If
a high profile Dem became outraged and spoke out. They always run and cower when the spotlight is shown on them doing something so utterly stupid.

I think even Repub. citizens don't want to see this country go in this direction. This is a VERY dangerous precedent to set that is for sure.

9. huh.
"Soros is just not the kind of person "we need or want in the nation's capital."

but a right-wing newspaper owning crazy religious leader who thinks he's the messiah, that's totally cool.

sigh.

10. But but but it's okay for the Chinese to buy Microsoft & Unocal
Have I got that right? A 900-lb gorilla of a country that has as its long-range goal to eliminate the US (I don't think they ever actually repudiated that notion and their recent interest in capitalism not only has zilch to do with democracy but still doesn't make them our ally) is allowed to purchase corporations that are probably vital to our national interests -- and the bright minds in the maladministration can't think of a good reason why maybe the US should not let them...

But Soros buying a ridiculous sports team gives them pause? Ow ow ow I think I have brain cramp.

>sigh< Some of those bozos have their heads where the sun don't shine.

12. Common cause
"But but but it's okay for the Chinese to buy Microsoft & Unocal"

Of course it is. The Chinese the Repubs share common values:

Supressing dissent.

Cheap labor.

Anti-union.

Torture.
