Hunter loses eye in tiger mauling

Wed Jun 29, 2005 09:11 AM ET

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A Cambodian hunter was attacked by two of the few remaining tigers in the country's jungles and lost an eye and chunks of both legs before the big cats were driven off by his dogs.

Svay Thim said he lay badly injured for two days in a northern jungle after Sunday's confrontation. "They jumped on me. They bit and hit me in the face several times," Svay Thim, 32, told Reuters by telephone Wednesday from his hospital bed in the northwestern city of Siem Reap.

An axe blow to the head stunned one tiger, while the dogs formed a perimeter around him and eventually fought off the big cats, Svay Thim said. "Without my dogs, I would have been eaten by the tigers," he said.

Only around 250 tigers are believed to remain in Cambodia, which still has large tracts of jungle.

1. Yeah, if he were a tiger hunter,
I'd wish he'd been eaten alive.

5. Wow, people are bitter...
I'm glad they didn't kill him, what's one less hunter? I hope they taught him a damn good lesson and he stops hunting tigers. Maybe he tells one more person to stop, who tells one other person.... I think a big hunk out of my leg and a missing eye would convince me to quit that so called "sport". Better to live with the lesson than to die and never learn. People are too quick to wish for death.. sometimes living is harder.

6. There are only about 3000 tigers left in the world, hunting them...
...is a despicable act of Poaching.

7. Oh, how long until they "find"
the 2 tigers and shoot them, seeing that they are a meance to humans?

I read about things like this happening before---people in Africa, or India, going out in the wild to do things like poach and hunt illegally. They get mauled by a wild animal. Person is injured or dies.

Group of 'vigilantes', or town police, then go out and stake out the area to find the offending wild animal, shoots & kills supposed wild animal (how do they know it was THAT tiger, or THAT lion? Do they wear signs?) because that wild animal is OBVIOUSLY a threat to humans.

Sad all around. I really really really hope they don't try to 'humanely euthanize' these tigers for doing something that comes naturally to them (protecting themselves from other animals). But, alas, our planet is inhabited mainly by people with the IQ of a snail.

These tigers need to high-tail it out of there, and quick, before they end up as a rug.

8. They always end up killing the animal.
And then there will be 2 less tigers in the world thanks to this poacher.

Someone re-post "Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright".

9. Here
TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies 5
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart? 10
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp 15
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee? 20

Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

10. Doesn'r say he was a "tiger hunter" and hunting is still a
job in many poor countries, where the game meat is sold.

Blake, well, he seems, shall we say, equivocal about tigers . . .
