Hiring changes upset veterans (KY)
For those not following it closely, we've got our own little GOP scandal going on in KY where our GOP guv (who promised to end waste, fraud and abuse and bring honor and integrity back to state government) fired some merit employees based on whether they were a democrat, which is a violation of state law. Three people have already been charged with misdemeanors.

They also started changing the classification of many merit jobs, where applicants are ranked by tests and/or job experience and only the top 5 can be considered. It appears they couldn't find repugs with sufficient skills/qualifications to make the top 5, so they changed the qualification of these jobs to just having a certain degree etc.

This had an un-intended affect of dissing our state veterans.

Here's the story
http://www.kentucky.com/mld/kentucky/12020125.htm

Choice snippets:

FRANKFORT - Military veterans and their advocates are angry that Gov. Ernie Fletcher's administration is gradually dropping a state hiring method that gives preference to veterans.
<snip>
But, as a 100-point scoring method is used less frequently, veterans and their spouses lose an advantage they have enjoyed for decades: five additional points added to their scores when applying for state jobs. Disabled veterans and their spouses get 10 points.
<snip>
"It saddens me that our governor, who is himself a veteran, fails to recognize the importance of honoring our veterans' service to their country with this one advantage ... particularly when we're at war," said Don Dixon, the Veterans of Foreign Wars district commander for Central Kentucky and a retired 35-year state employee.
<snip>
"This is a no-brainer way for the state to say 'Thank you' to our veterans," said Heather French Henry of Louisville, the former Miss America who is a national advocate for veterans' rights.

4. Might I suggest they look into a Class Action suit?
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 09:15 AM by elehhhhna
This sit contains excellent info plus updates on class action suits filed, settled, won, lost etc.

CA Suits are going to become more popular as there's safely in numbers, they are muy-expensive for Corps. to defend against, and settlements are generally reached, anyway, for 2 reasons: the expense of defense counsel and the ugly fact that recipients can be essentially be coerced into signing gag orders on the facts of the case (whatever goes to trial is made public).

5. Thanks for posting. Another quote from Heather French Henry:
{i}"I don't know why they felt it was necessary to do away with this part of the merit system after all of these years," said Henry, who is married to former Lt. Gov. Steve Henry. "It's clearly an affront to our veterans, whether it was intentional or not."

Henry said she might try to organize Kentucky veterans groups to lobby the Fletcher administration in favor of preserving the scoring method of hiring, or at least finding some way to keep a preference for veterans.

BTW, as an aside, her husband, Steven L. Henry, M.D. is a DEMOCRAT.

She sounded good. I hope you're not saying they're both as bad as the ruling rethugs in the state.

10. I can't speak for Roland
but I, and many others, can't stand Henry or Patton either. They are Democrats in name only. They screwed the working class over hard.

12. Democrats don't realize how lucky they are
that both John Y. Brown and Paul Patton were brought down by scandals before they were able to disgrace the party on the national scene.
