Hotels 'cash in' on bomb attacks
Hundreds of commuters spent Thursday night stranded in London and some have accused hoteliers of cashing in on the crisis in the capital.
Prices at a number of London's hotels increased by more than double on Thursday night, the BBC has learned.

With the transport networks down and no way of returning home, one businessman from Manchester told the BBC he had paid £250 for an £80 room.

A spokesman for the British Hospitality Association, which represents hotels, said he was surprised by the increases.

Commuters said they were appalled, and thousands chose to walk for hours to reach home rather than stay the night in a hotel.

14. Funny...
some businesses in the U.S had no problem exploiting the September 11th attacks, especially gas stations.

17. Yep, that happened here. Those stations went out of business because
nobody would buy gas from them after that.

Hume, Cha-Ching-Cheney, AWOL Bush, Ken Lay, Chevron, Exxon/Mobil, Texaco etc. are nothing but opportunists who create crisis situations in order to make money off of everyone else's misery.

12. you'd think that the British would have laws against this sort of thing!
Laws against price-gouging or exploiting people struck by disaster are commonplace in the US.

I never saw any profiteering when Maine had that big ice storm in '98. It was the dead of winter, and the power was out for days thoughout most of the state.

My sympathies to the British public, and I hope that their government will do more to protect them.

16. We saw this in the big '94 quake
Quite a few store owners were fined or arrested for price-gouging after our '94 Northridge quake here in L.A. Including the assclown who owns the big hardware store not far from me.

I have to contrast that with the old Iranian guy who ran a little deli beside my house. He threw open the doors and gave away everything perishable in the store. He said he would rather see it go to his hungry neighbors than spoil. (Most of us had no gas or electricity for about a week, at least in my neighborhood.)
