Anarchists' weapon is 90 gallons of cooking oil

Anarchists' weapon is 90 gallons of cooking oil
By David Lister and Shirley English

ATTEMPTS by anarchists to disrupt the G8 summit in Scotland were thwarted yesterday when a series of weapons were seized by police.

Items confiscated over the past 48 hours include 90 gallons of cooking oil, which police said anarchists had intended to pour on the A9, the main route from Edinburgh to Gleneagles. Police also said they had recovered knives, wooden and metal poles, a crowbar, bolt cutters, axes and canisters of CS spray and pepper spray.

With protesters leaving Scotland in growing numbers, police showed their determination to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s violence by surrounding an “ecocamp” outside Stirling, where thousands of protesters have been staying over the past few days. Police believe that the camp has been sheltering about 300 violent anarchists who took part in attacks on Wednesday morning, smashing car and shop windows and hurling stones at officers.

In other searches after clashes outside the Gleneagles Hotel on Wednesday, items recovered included an axe, a saw, a machete, rocks, stakes and a catapult with ballbearings.

20. They've never said they were peaceful.
Anarchism, has not been a peaceful philosophy, by and large. Why were people expecting different?

31. Dont over generalize.
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 09:56 AM by K-W
Destruction and violence as a form of protest has almost always been a small minority tactic amongst anarchists, and when it wasnt, the government and business elites were themselves employing violence against the peaceful attempts by the working class to assert thier rights.

37. I guess it depends on your definition of peaceful.
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 02:24 PM by K-W
All anarchists are revolutionaries.
Only a select group of anarchists today choose violence or property destruction as valid tools of the social revolution they hope to achieve.

30. You don't need cooking oil to make biodiesel.
All you need is an oil and and a alcohol. You could go skim the algae of a pond and squeeze the oil out of it. Then you would need to make some ethyl alcohol, which is easy to do if you look at the prohibition era. Then they are mixed in a 9:1 ratio and put through a transesterification process.

7. Don't forgot the poles
Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 08:12 AM by bvar22
The police found some poles within 5 miles of the G8. I wonder if these suspicious and deadly poles had telephone wires or lights attached.
I heard that one of the poles was within 500 yards of a rock!

6. 90 gals of cooking oil divided by 300 anarchists...
(assuming the camp consisted ENTIRELY of the 300 anarchists they were searching for)...

works out to a third of a gallon of cooking oil apiece. WOULD IT BE CONCEIVABLE THEY WERE USING IT FOR...(wait for it, wait for it)...

COOKING?

13. Reminds me of the riots in the late 60's
where the police searched a garage, found a can of gas, empty bottles and some rags and charged the owner with having the materials to make Molotov Cocktails. Look in your garage. Better clean up before the cops get there. LOL!
