Mexican police chief survives attempt on life (First day on the job)
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-mex08.html

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico -- Nuevo Laredo's new police chief survived his first day on the job with three bodyguards shadowing his every move, but one of his police officers in this lawless border city wasn't so lucky.

The officer was killed and two other policemen badly wounded by shots fired from a truck at their private car late Wednesday. That shooting brought to eight the number of Nuevo Laredo police officers killed this year, including the former police chief, Alejandro Dominguez. He was gunned down within hours of taking office. snip

When asked if he feared for his life, Pimentel, who has three small children and a pregnant wife, said he preferred not to think about it. City officials wouldn't release his salary and Pimentel said he'd rather not discuss that either: ''I don't want people to come kidnap me for money,'' he said.

1. Man on Fire
Anyone seen that Denzel Washington revenge movie?
The corruption they portray in that movie seems similar to this.
Tragic really.

2. Great movie.
And the corruption they show in that movie is based on reality. It sucks for police in Mexico. They get paid more than factory workers, but less than cab drivers. I heard it's something like $350 a week. Plus they have hard core crime, so they get paid crap to be shot at by the civilians they're hired to protect. No wonder we're always hearing about how the cops and drug lords are working together, they have to eat, too. Good luck Pimentel.

3. Last March they recovered a Bazooka
In another ambush on the Chief of Police in Nuevo Laredo.

Before that, a childhood friend of mine was kidnapped on New Year's eve, held for days and tortured. His bullet riddled body was recovered on the road to Monterrey, still handcuffed. He was about to become the Deputy Chief of Police in Reynosa.

It is an absolute war zone along the Texas border, but you hardly hear about it in the mainstream media.
