MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Oprah Winfrey and Paul Rusesabagina, whose heroism in the face of genocide inspired the movie "Hotel Rwanda," were announced Thursday as recipients of the National Civil Rights Museum's top honors.

The museum, built around the former Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, said Winfrey and Rusesabagina will receive its 2005 Freedom Awards....

***

Rusesabagina will receive the International Freedom Award, which also has been given to Nelson Mandela and Bono.

The museum said a new Lifetime Achievement Award for civil rights activism will be given to actress Ruby Dee and her late husband, Ossie Davis....

***

Museum Director Beverly Robertson described Winfrey as "a great humanitarian" who has used her Oprah Winfrey Foundation to provide scholarships and grants to help educate poor children in the United States and abroad....

3. So one should not be upset by racism if one is rich and famous?

5. Please don't dismiss Oprah as someone who is superficial or even
vain. She's done amazing things for Africa, and a lot of good elsewhere in the world as well. She's an incredible role model who inspires and actually even saves lives on a regular basis via the work that she does. Pretty good for an "entertainer."

And sometimes she just has fun.

I can't wait to see what she and her producers do with the Hermes story/debacle. Should be interesting.

6. I agree. Sometimes the Oprah bashing on DU really gets to me.
I want someone to tell me who better than her to receive this award? Just because she did her friend Maria a favor by having Arnold on, she will never be forgiven and that's just as petty as anything I've seen a Republican do. I live in CA and Arnold is a pain in the ass, but Oprah's not the fool that voted him in so people should get off her back. Sorry, end of rant.
