L.A. councilman asks peers to endorse gay marriage bill

In his first address on the topic since his election, Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl spoke Friday in favor of a state bill to legalize same-sex marriage while telling his colleagues of his own inner conflicts over his sexual orientation.
Rosendahl, whose district includes Westchester and Playa del Rey, held up a copy of the Bible as he described his struggle to reconcile his Catholicism with his homosexuality. "God made me this way," said the 60-year-old Mar Vista resident as he stood on the council floor. "This is my Bible I've had for 35 years, and there are tears in it in the sections of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as I was wrestling and struggling with my identity."
The council postponed a decision until Tuesday on whether to support the marriage bill, which faces an uphill battle in the state Legislature this year.
The discussion drew testimony from gay-rights activists and foes of the state bill, who argued that it would violate the wishes of California voters -- who approved an initiative in 2000 defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
