Fox News slammed over 'callous' line

Julian Borger in Washington
Saturday July 9, 2005
The Guardian

Rupert Murdoch's Fox News channel was under fire yesterday for comments by some of its leading journalists in response to the London bombs.

Speaking about the reaction of the financial markets, Brit Hume, the channel's Washington managing editor, said: "Just on a personal basis ... I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought 'hmm, time to buy'."

The host of a Fox News programme, Brian Kilmeade, said the attacks had the effect of putting terrorism back on the top of the G8's agenda, in place of global warming and African aid. "I think that works to our advantage, in the western world's advantage, for people to experience something like this together, just 500 miles from where the attacks have happened."

Another Fox News host, John Gibson, said before the blasts that the International Olympic Committee "missed a golden opportunity" by not awarding the 2012 games to France. "If they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn't worry about terrorism. They'd blow up Paris, and who cares?" He added: "This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics - let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while."

46. Write the FCC
How to Contact the FCC

To Contact the Commissioners via E-mail

Chairman Kevin J. Martin: KJMWEB@fcc.gov
Commissioner Kathleen Q. Abernathy: Kathleen.Abernathy@fcc.gov
Commissioner Michael J. Copps: Michael.Copps@fcc.gov
Commissioner Jonathan S. Adelstein: Jonathan.Adelstein@fcc.gov

My note to the FCC:

Subject: Hate Speech broadcast - FOX NEWS John Gibson

Gibson's recent comments should be interpreted as HATE SPEECH. It's truly disgusting how he is rejoicing at the idea of an attack on the French people and the death and turmoil that would ensue.

The FCC should fine Fox News for hate speech and officially and publicly apologize, Gibson should be fined and/or fired.

Comments:

Fox's Gibson on "golden opportunity" missed: If France had been selected for 2012 Olympics, terrorists would "blow up Paris, and who cares?"

The day before the July 7 terrorist attacks on London buses and subways, Fox News host John Gibson stated that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) "missed a golden opportunity" because, if France had been selected to host the 2012 Olympics, terrorists would "blow up Paris, and who cares?" Following the London attacks, Gibson reiterated that the IOC ought to have selected Paris instead of London, because the British should "let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while."

From the July 6 broadcast of Westwood One's The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly, guest-hosted by Gibson: "By the way, just wanted to tell you people, we missed -- the International Olympic Committee missed a golden opportunity today. If they had picked France, if they had picked France instead of London to hold the Olympics, it would have been the one time we could look forward to where we didn't worry about terrorism. They'd blow up Paris, and who cares?"

From the "My Word" segment of the July 7 edition of Fox News' The Big Story with John Gibson: "The bombings in London: This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics -- let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while."

21. Talking point memo: play it down so it doesn't reflect poorly on bush
If their reaction had been appropriate, the logical conclusion would be that bush and blair (but mostly bush) are not making the world safer, that we aren't just "fighting them over there."

So one by one, they belittle it. And now rush opened his unbelievably stupid maw and declared, "It's not a successful terrorist attack."

Yes, there is definitely a plan and a pattern here, to diminish the tragedy. I can only imagine how the Brits feel about their rebellious spawn now.

"And now the liberals want to stop President Reagan from selling chemical warfare agents and military equipment to Saddam Hussein, and why? Because Saddam 'allegedly' gassed a few Kurds in his own country. Mark my words. All of this talk of Saddam Hussein being a 'war criminal' or 'committing crimes against humanity' is the same old thing. LIBERAL HATE SPEECH! And speaking of poison gas . . . I SAY WE ROUND UP ALL THE DRUG ADDICTS AND GAS THEM."

20. British media were just as bad
on Thursday morning, reporting the "victory" over the French with stunning amounts of juvenile malice and Francophobia. This includes Channel 4 News, ITN and the BBC. So it was no wonder when, on Friday, British school kids were joking that the French must have planted the bombs.

This concerted attempt by the right to smear and demonise the French is proceding on both sides of the Atlantic. It feeds off long established prejudice against France and is fuelled by the fact that the French are resisting "Anglo Saxon values" in all fields, including politics, the economy and foreign affairs. It makes me even more ashamed to be British than I have been since the poodle trotted after his master into Iraq.

A lot of my friends are french living in Belgium , and every so often we go to london for some vacation time .And I assure you the brits are as nice as ever .The media has always had loud and snotty spasms, but it affects policy nor true understanding .

But Fox , now they are scum suckers , to put tragedy into a coined economical opportunity is ....well it's just ...and pardon my french ...a show of humanity ,inteligence and insight lacking , which comming from those inbred ass whipes doesn't surprise me .

We all enjoyed watching monty python though , and drinking our tripple brewed beer (made by catholic -pro-choice monks) savor the moments of stupidity , knowing those who bring hope and human spirit to policy and media alike , will in the end prevail .After history has reduced the likes of fox to a sad pathetic sidenote of xenophobia

And it's not as much resisting anglo saxon values , as not accepting them as a generic pre-package .We're not above fast food , and all the consumerist quick fixes ,...we just have our own version thereof .Also it's illegal for your boss to give you less than 7 weeks of paid vacation , or make you work on weekends .Which sends a burnsian shiver down the spines of all corporate bosses .

This is just honest and moral facts! Gibson is telling children, youth, adults to kill any people on Earth you don't agree with. It is okay to plant bombs to kill innocent people in India, China, Malaysia, Russia, America, Canada (more than half of Canadians speak French), Haiti, Iraq, Venezuela, Vatican...

But it's not Gibson. It's Murdoch and the American Republican leadership who are the Puppet Masters.

We'll also throw some pies at him ....because ...yes ...we are hippies , in that we are still adhering to non violence .

The right wing nut jobs and the terror spreading fuckers , would surely love to pick each other's brains on how to make war , not peace .Spread fear , not hope . And above all mess up this world , merely because they themselves run frustrated (ref: gay marriage remark )

And Bernard henry Levy , went to Pakistan to find out all he could about the murder of Daniel pearl .Writting a book called who killed daniel Pearl , or qui a tue daniel pearl .You'll find it to tell you more about terrorism than this government has ever conceived

36. Welcome to DU, johannes1984!
I hope one day to be able to visit your fine country.

And thank you for having the perception to recognize that not all Americans are uninformed, France-hating hicks. It angers me every time someone makes some asinine comment about the French being cowards; don't they realize that French troops have fought and died alongside ours in Afghanistan? How can they spit on the graves of those young men and women that way, just because the French government didn't happen to go along hook, line, and sinker with Bush's every greedy and imperialistic whim?

In actively promoting a terror attack on France, Mr. Gibson seems to have totally forgotten the heartfelt sympathy and good will that the people of France extended to us after September 11th. What a useless bag of wind he is, along with all his Fux buddies. These opportunistic rightwing thugs really ought to be ashamed of themselves.

It's been my privelege to spend half of my life in the United States .And Americans are some of the nicest people around (EG , the welcomes ) .And i can't reiterate this enough , except for the loud media , neither europeans , nor americans hate each other .In fact we're closer not just policy wise , but human spirit , than most politicians realize .

And americans visiting europe are always more than welcome, not just because of your greenbacks , but because it is living proof of the closeness of both people .that and it's good to have a world where all are familiar with the idea that all humans really are equal .

Equal , but different .And that difference is seen in Fox fuckers and human beings .The fox fuckers , like horny dogs (i beg forgiveness of dogs ) blindly follow cracker ideas , theirs isn't bigger than a drone or mind dwarf .While most other people will try to be bigger than that , and thereby live up to something ever so human .hope .

....

LEVY: I think we have choice. We made the bad choice
since 20 years. We chose the radical against the
moderate.

We chose. we, you, American, us French, both of us,
Bush and Chirac in the same basket. We chose the
Taliban against Massoud. We chose Saudi Arabia against
the democrats of the Arab world. We chose that because
we wanted peace. Because we thought that we had to
make alliance with the most powerful. Because we
thought that our main enemy was the Soviet Union.

Because we are lazy. Because the Americans and the
French diplomats often are intellectually lazy. They
continue to work on old schemes. They have to change
their minds today.

BRANCACCIO: And what should they do going forward
then? We screwed up.

LEVY: To arrange force to support much more than we do
the moderate Muslims all over the world. There are a
lot even in Pakistan. I met so many intellectuals,
democrats, women who don't understand why we support
so much without any tie, without any condition the
regime of Musharraf which is on the one side military,
on the other side Jihadist. Which is on the one side
the regime of repression, dictatorship as Saddam
Hussein in a way.

And in another side a fanatic one. You have the local
people inside Pakistan who pray us, who urge us, who
admonished us to put some conditions on our aid to
Musharraf.

33. Imagine the shoe on the other foot
Imagine the wingnut talk-radio uproar if, after a terrorist attack on New York, a "liberal" journalist on one of the "liberal" media outlets hade gone on TV and said something like: "I mean, my first thought when I heard—just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack on the Fox News building where an explosion had ripped commentator Brit Hume into confetti-sized ribbons of blood, meat, bone and fecal matter, and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, 'Hmmm, time to buy.'"

Those assholes would be having kittens.

Dear Chairman Martin and Commissioners Abernathy, Copps, and Adelstein:

I'm all for free speech. Newscasters and radio pundits however, do, I believe, have a duty not to speak about humans in such a way that their lives appear not to matter.

This is dehumanizing and as a psychologist I believe it has a profound though subtle effect on how people perceive their fellow humans.

Are you willing to allow newscasters to present people as fodder?

Sincerely,

Following the London attacks, Gibson reiterated that the IOC ought to have selected Paris instead of London, because the British should "let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while."

item 2:

Nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh downplayed the death toll from the July 7 London bombings. On that afternoon's broadcast of his radio show, Limbaugh told listeners, "It's like I said -- 40 people dead, 150 seriously wounded, 1,000 wounded out of over 1 million people in that transit tube. It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks."

While Limbaugh apparently does not find the July 7 bombings particularly significant, the The New York Times reported: "The attacks were the worst in British memory since World War II."

From the July 7 broadcast of The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: That's, ah, the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. Very powerful, excellent. And it was such a great contrast to what we're seeing in our own media this morning with the hand-wringing I was speaking about and the "Oh, woe is us" and "Oh, what did we do to cause this?" and "Oh, does this mean we're going to get hit?" and "Oh ..." It's like I said -- 40 people dead, 150 seriously wounded, 1,000 wounded, out of over 1 million people in that transit tube. It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks. They didn't succeed in doing anything, and that's just what you just heard the mayor say: "You don't scare us. You didn't accomplish diddly-squat. We've been through this before, much worse than this. And look at us -- we're in the 20th century, you're still back in the 14th century.

57. Please don't go there
Censorship is not a liberal value. Fatassed mepublican greedheads have the same right to express thier stupid and offensive opinions that the rest of us do.

Surely there are consequences when one says something so blatantly offensive, but they need not involve further FCC restrictions on what can be broadcast.

Anyhow, this is the Bush FCC. They won't care unless there was a naughty word or a tit involved.

Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 10:34 PM by ovidsen
The FCC has NO regulatory power over what's on cable TV. None. It only has jurisdiction over over-the-air radio and television.

As much as I'd like to see Mr. Hume, and Fox, run over by a bus, petitioning the FCC won't accomplish squat.:banghead:

Public awareness and boycotts, on the other hand...

But as for Rush... write away!

edited to recognize that Rush's rants are indeed FCC territory.

under the Patriot Act.

Thank you for the ids. It is important to write and it is GOOD.

43. Yes! It has come to that! The bullies need to be beaten...
in some many way.

I feel like it should be the last reel and the little people turn on the big thugs and beat the crap out of them.

And no, no... don't say "you'd sink to their level," because I don't buy it any more.

Somebody should have spanked them when they were little.
Or at least washed their mouths out with soap.

UGH.

64. I believe
it was Woody Allen who once said something like - sarcasm and satire doesn't work on Nazi's, baseball bats work on Nazi's.

"Patriotism is not about blind loyalty to your nations leaders or founders, it is about a willingness to always look for the truth. Patriotism is about making your nation better for everyone, not just the rich."

The Fox News media relations office had not responded by the time the Guardian went to press yesterday.

Too busy trying to spin it into something less crass.

Have fun, guys. May you reap what you sow.

49. LET FOX NEWS KNOW THAT YOU ARE DISGUSTED WITH LONDON COVERAGE
Just when you thought Fox News couldn't get any lower--Fox News host Brian Kilmeade and Fox News business contributor and substitute host Stuart Varney seemed to be reveling in how the bombing in London "works to our advantage". Gloating in how it puts the "war on terrorism" on the front burner and aid to Africa and global warming on the back burner.

See the Media Matters report and watch the Fox News video at this link:

http://mediamatters.org/items/200507070005

If you thought the coverage of these horrific events couldn't get lower than that--Brit Hume reacted by saying that his first reaction to hearing about the bombings in London was to look at the futures market and say to himself "hmm-time to buy".

Then later—not to be out-done—On The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly, guest-hosted by Fox host John Gibson talked about how they should have blown up Paris instead. “No one would care”

53. Don't you get it?
It's not a coincidence that three of Faux's "news" guys made comments rational people find ugly. This type of bad boy bravado is the New Republicanism. GWB is the poster boy. I've ranted about this in GD. These guys won't be reprimanded. They'll be rewarded. This offensive, snarky behavior sells. The conservatives love it. It's "masculine" to them. It's what "real men" say. You know, macho guys hate France. Macho guys invest in the market and make Halliburton type money. Macho guys figure the angles about "what is good" for us. Well, them, really.
Meanwhile, the macho guys who are impressed by such hateradio blather have never been to France. They don't have millions, or even thousands, invested in the stock market. But...maybe someday...maybe. Maybe. They'll be super-rich like Dubya. Who inherited his money.
It's just so fake. And pathetic. I hate it that people worldwide see these repulsive hacks and think they represent America.
They're the worst of us.

since the New Republicans are displaying such "bad boy bravado," perhaps they should prove their macho by serving in Iraq. Young Republicans, heed OYE's call!

56. Gibson gives aid and comfort to terrorists.
He's basically down with the killing of innocents, as long as they're innocents he doesn't like.

Why, I do think that makes him a sympathizer, by the so-called logic of the administration.

66. Should be tortured at Gitmo to uncover GOP plan to incite bloodshed across
the world. I honestly and serviously believe Gibson would give more information on a conspiracy in the American Media/GOP/Bush Party to purposely provoke war, bloodshed, and terrorism by/on Muslims by/on innocent Anglo citizens than ALL of the Muslim detainees currently in all known and unknown US prisons across the Earth.

is in The Guardian where it can be seen by the English and the French.

They need to know what some of America is experiencing at the hands of Ghouls and Derelicts!

Especially that john gibson..we all knew he was vile and ignoble but this is gibson being himself on a world stage.

62. This is part of the reason why I watch Keith Olbermann.
For the last little while, he's had a new daily feature on his show called "World's Worst Person." He presents two runners-up and then an overall winner of the day. Last night, the winner was Brit Hume.

How can someone on a "news" channel say something so hateful and keep his job?

I already wrote to Hume, now I send to send John Gibson a piece of my mind.

They really exposed themselves for what they really are this time. The question is, how many Americans care?

69. we are dealing with pure unadulterated evil

they are so arrogantly evil that they feel no need to control their evil impulses. they feel that they have carte blanche to do and say whatever they wish because there will be no retaliation. they are encouraged and cheered on by the likes of bush, cheney, and rove.

" Outfoxed " was a pretty telling film about these evil mouthpieces of the current WH.

70. one day, someone will bust a beer bottle right across hume's teeth
and i hope to be there watching it happen,

i think that the only way these assholes will stop their ugliness is for some of them to beaten to with an inch of their lives. most are such moral cowards that they would shut up in fear of getting clubbed.

i don't condone violence, but i would not get between brit hume and the ass whipping he certainly desires.
