Michael Moore Film Fest Draws Competition
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 10:16 AM by KzooDem
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -

A local activist and a conservative group from Texas said Wednesday they were putting together an alternative to the Traverse City Film Festival, which Moore and residents of this Lake Michigan community are organizing.

"People are fed up and tired with the extreme left-wing radical fringe — America haters, family haters, Christian haters," said Genie Aldrich, a resident of nearby Suttons Bay and founder of the Traverse Bay Freedom Film Festival. She tried unsuccessfully last month to dissuade the city commission from letting Moore's group show films in a municipal waterfront park.

"I like it when Republicans take ideas of mine," said Moore, a Flint, Mich. native who has residences in neighboring Antrim County and New York City. "I have a few more where those came from, if they'd like to sit down and talk."

Moore and fellow members of the larger festival's organizing committee have billed their program as nonpartisan and motivated only by appreciation for artistically superior filmmaking. None of Moore's films, such as the anti-war "Fahrenheit 9/11," are being shown.

9. GOP think tanks and PACs pay these people
They give them some seed-money to start up conservative propaganda events, and travel to other states.

2. "Freedom Film Festival" ??? Does this mean the original name was
the Traverse Bay French Film Festival?

I always get so confused about which words or countries they are mad at lately. :spank:

3. It's so like the RW to attack culture and the arts, ala Der S.S.
I mean, why doesn't the bitch just drop her pretenses and call it the First Annual Eva Braun & Adolph Hitler Memorial Film Festival?

4. Moore's festival is showing "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"
"Casablanca" and "The Princess Bride" among other titles.

24. Ferris Bueller is anti-family
because Ferris disobeys his parents.

Casablanca is anti-American because it takes place in another country.

Princess Bride is anti-American because Andre the Giant is French.

5. People are fed up and tired of the left wing?
How could that even be possible? Where does the left wing have any power, influence or even visability?

These people are NUTS!

25. Where does the left wing have any power, influence or even visability?
In the RW's twisted fantasy world. One has to go into Gregor Samsa mode to even coexist there for a second.

Does anybody really want to see all the episodes of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER and GOMER PYLE in a movie theatre in one sitting?

11. Could you imagine an in-depth right-wing documentary?
Lies can't stand up to inquiry. They'd be tripping all over themselves...really short excerpts to take things out of context, huge doses of unsupported assertions and name-calling. If they actually did some objective fact-finding with thoughtful analysis, they'd end up as converts. Instead, they'll start with a belief and figure out any way to justify it and ignore or condemn anything contradictory.

15. Those were actually pretty progressive TV series...
As someone noted in another thread, Ward and June Cleaver always discussed their domestic problems as equals. Ward never treated June like an empty-headed robot.

And Gomer Pyle was a natural subversive, always undermining the authority of Sgt. Carter. A modern version of "The Good Soldier Schweik."

I imagine a right-wing film fest would show all the episodes of Touched By An Angel. Maybe intercut, for musical relief, with the Best Of Lawrence Welk.

8. Repub Leeches
They leech onto the name, the theme, the location, and the date! Shit, have they no dignity, no shame? They don't even realize how pathetic this makes them.

Sounds like a great spot to set up for the local military recruiters though!

10. "America haters, family haters, Christian haters" ...
This is really the intellectual equivalent of calling your opponent "a bad poopoo head". There is such a lack of intellect and imagination in the right wing now, it continually boggles my mind. We're dealing with five-year olds with money and guns. That's all that's left of the GOP. Rich children with weapons.

That all these copy-cat "we'll do it the Right Wing way" type stuff, especially something as demanding as a Film Festival, always sucks pond water. All the money in the world can NOT make the Right Wing become creative and/or spontaneous. :P

I can just image: perhaps they'll show all "Prime Chuck?" That would consist of all Chuck Norris flicks and those tired old Texas Ranger episodes. Perhaps he and Brit Hume can tandem parachute (wimps!) jump into the events, just like at ole' H W Bush's Birthday bash? Oh the spills and thrills!?! :boring:

On Edit: In all fairness Chuck Norris kicks butt with regard to his awesome Karate skills, but well, like Steven Segal, there's really not much talent in the acting arena. Sorry Chuck - please don't kick my ass? :hippie:

19. Attention whores
besides, the people that would be interested in seeing their rw propaganda films won't be able to take time off from their WalMart jobs to attend.

If the rw could ever come up with a new idea on their own without it being some knee-jerk overreaction to imaginary boogeymen who are not bothering them in the first place, perhaps they might be taken somewhat seriously, but not by much.

21. Moore's Response
Moore's response is perfect--basically, "Bring It!"

The whole ACLU position on free speech is that, when all speech is given a free and open airing, people will be able to separate the wheat from the chaff.

The whole wingnut philosophy is about shutting down opposition. Moore knows that the opposition will only look silly next to a worthy opponent, so let it hang itself!

22. gee, "DC 9/11 -- Time of Crisis" is going to be lonely up there!
That's the Bush biopic made with White House approval and access, which unfortunately is so bad that it doesn't even work as propaganda. (Rent it and listen to the director and producer's commentary -- it's so self-serving that I found myself giggling uncontrollably. Timothy Bottoms, probably desparate to shut those guys up, was reduced to talking about how he suffered from an uncomfortable skin rash while he was playing the role of Bush.)

23. Moore's showing "Italian for Beginners."
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 07:39 PM by CBHagman
It's a life-affirming Scandinavian film (yes, you read that right) about how people connect at a community Italian class and begin to overcome their loneliness and their dysfunctional lives. I saw it a few years back and think it really needs to be seen all over America.

And no one who actually bothered to see "Italian for Beginners" would regard it as either anti-Christian or anti-family, though it doesn't sugarcoat relations between parents and children, for starters.

Better Genie Aldrich should get a bag of popcorn and watch, listen, and learn.
