Reid: Pick Nominee in Earl Warren Mold (Dem radio address)
snip>
In his party's weekly radio address, Reid, D-Nev., noted that Saturday marked the anniversary of the 1974 death of Warren, a Republican whose court established a liberal tradition with its 1954 school desegregation ruling and other decisions. Reid said Warren had been able to forge a consensus on the court that would become the national consensus.

"Mr. President, that's the kind of justice we hope you'll nominate," Reid said in Saturday's broadcast. "Someone who will bring us together. A mainstream justice who won't use their judicial robe as a cloak to impose their political ideology on the country."
...
"But radical-right activists are hungry for something else," he added. "President Bush's far-right allies are spending millions of dollars to pressure him to pick not just a conservative, but an extreme conservative, someone out of the mainstream, someone who will impose their narrow partisan agenda from the perch of the highest court in the land instead of faithfully interpreting the law."

"America deserves better," he said.

Reid began the radio address by issuing a call to bring to justice those responsible for the terror attacks in London and "finally bring Osama bin Laden to account for his crimes." He also said the U.S. must become much more serious about protecting the country from attack.

1. "Pick a Nominee in the Howard Dean Mold" honesty, morality,
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 02:01 PM by dArKeR
straight forward, uncorruptable, the interest of the Nation first and not the jobs your relatives and descendants will receive... is what the panzy Reid should be saying!

2. Oh yeah, THAT will happen.
What, exactly, makes you think anything remotely approaching a liberal would be appointed? Are you high?

11. I'd Be Happy If the Nominee Didn't Have Bush Tool Written All Over
If Bush picked someone BushCo had NO previous dealings with, then I might believe in a chance at justice. (Is there any such person?)

5. Warren was a good moderate
But that was before the wacko right really took hold. We can hope someone as level as Warren is picked.

AWOL is going to nominate 2-4 very conservative judges during his remaining 4 years. He has a repub senate and the media in his back pocket.

7. Eisenhower thought Warren was right wing
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 03:41 PM by despairing optimist
There was little in his record in California to that point that would have indicated otherwise. It may happen that someone * nominates undergoes a similar conversion once attaining a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. All that that person need be is smarter and stealthier than * & Co. are, not too tall an order.

9. Warren was LIBERAL Republican!
There used to be such a thing! In fact Repukes offered the few voices of sanity when Jim Crow DEMOCRATS ruled the south. We live in a topsy-turvy world, let nothing surprise you.

8. What a moronic thing to say
I like Harry Reid, but this is just another line the mainstream media will ridicule him with.

To expect or hope that an angry, stubborn religious rightwinger will appoint someone like Earl Warren is either mind bogglingly naive (if Reid believes it) or terribly misguided public relations (if he doesn't.)

10. "mainstream...an open mind and a big heart."
Great framing, especially the big heart part, codeword for nonideologue or non Bush asshole (e.g., a Bolton of the court), is how I would perceive it.

12. Gotta Love Harry Reid--He Doesn't Shy from our Liberal Heritage
Earl Warren is a true American hero. Too bad most other dems don't say this again, and again and again.
