Six Afghans beheaded 'by Taleban'

Six Afghan policemen have been beheaded after an ambush by suspected Taleban guerrillas, Afghan officials have said.

Four other police died and more were wounded when a 30-man convoy was caught in a two-hour gun battle in the southern province of Helmand.

The six police were seized and taken away. They were later found beheaded on a roadside after a lengthy search.

The Taleban were removed from power in 2001, but have stepped up attacks ahead of elections in September.

The governor of Helmand province said the attackers entered Afghanistan by crossing the nearby border from Pakistan, and had crossed back into Pakistan after the ambush.

KABUL, July 10 (Reuters) - The decapitated bodies of six Afghan policemen were found in southern Afghanistan at the weekend, on the same day Taliban guerrillas claimed to have beheaded a missing U.S. commando, officials said on Sunday.

The bodies and heads of the policemen, who had been abducted by Taliban guerrillas on Friday, were found dumped in Deshu district of Helmand province, near the border with Pakistan, on Saturday, provincial governor Sher Mohammad Akhundzada said.

"Six policemen were beheaded yesterday, it was a very brutal act," he told Reuters, adding that government forces were searching for those responsible. snip

Two Afghan drivers were killed when Taliban guerrillas attacked and set fire to a convoy of 15 trucks bringing fuel from Pakistan to U.S. military forces in the central province of Uruzgan on Sunday, an Afghan security official said.
