Iowa native is killed on duty in Iraq (#1753)

A U.S. Army medic who grew up in Urbandale died Saturday in Iraq, according to the man's family.

Pfc. Eric Paul Woods , 26 , of Omaha reportedly died while assisting another soldier somewhere in Iraq. He is the second soldier from Urbandale and the 31st Iowan to be killed in Iraq or Afghanistan since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Marine Pfc. Brandon Sturdy, 19, of Urbandale was killed on May 13, 2004, when a bomb blew up near Fallujah, west of Baghdad.

Department of Defense officials had not confirmed Woods' death Saturday night, although Lt. Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said the department's policy is to wait 24 hours after family members are notified.
