Schumer: Democrats 'Will Not Roll Over'
White House Still Consulting Senators

By Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, July 11, 2005; Page A04

Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said yesterday that Democrats "will not roll over" for an extreme nominee for the Supreme Court, and White House officials continued the process of consulting what they said will eventually be dozens of senators from both parties about whom President Bush should pick.

Both parties used the weekend as a reprieve to hone their messages ahead of what they believe could be a statement today from Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist that he will retire. Top officials said they had no hard evidence that Rehnquist plans such an announcement, and a key Republican senator even said he doubts it is true.

Rehnquist's departure would mean at least two confirmation hearings, complicating the job for the Senate but perhaps helping Bush by allowing him to balance his picks to please more than one constituency.

Bush is scheduled to meet with senators from both parties tomorrow, but Republican officials said they do not expect him to choose a nominee until the last week of July.

7. Hee hee. Still, it all depends on how one defines "extremist."
Does it not?

Schumer and, say, Lieberman can be counted upon to differ.

Currently, Lieberman and the Liebermen control the party; it will be their verdict that counts.

The DLC jellyfish will be eager to put the matter to rest: they have more serious matters like fundraising and reelection to think about. The conflict between them and the remnants of the once-progressive Democratic Party will determine our fate.

2. Hopefully Sen. Schumer is correct that Dems won't roll over, but rolling
over by Dems has been so endemic, I'm not holding my breath.

3. Yes they will.
Wish DU had a betting pool. I'd put a lot of money on it.

Call me a cynic if you like the word. I call it being a realist.

8. Uh-huh, riiiiight (sarcasm) ...
That's why Senate Minority Leader Reid was quoted last week as saying that Gonzalez was "qualified" to be a Supreme Court justice.

Sounds like they're already starting to roll.

Jeezus, why do Dems always have to be so "deferential" and "honorable" -- only to get run over time after time.

Talk about a circular firing squad ...

9. Perhaps Senator Shumer should discuss the matter
with one Senator Reid... and maybe get the party in line, rather than going to the press with empty statements....
