Guantanamo Bay detainees play soccer, eat well: US senator

WASHINGTON, July 10 (AFP) - Inmates from the US-led war on terror held at the prison camp at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are well treated, play outdoor sports, and have access to a broad Muslim-approved menu, a US senator who traveled to the site said Sunday.

US Senator Pat Roberts, a conservative Republican from Kansas, said on "Fox News Sunday" that he just returned from visiting the Guantanamo detention site.

"They have a Muslim menu down there of 113 dishes," said Roberts, chairman of the US Senate Intelligence Committee.

"I saw them playing soccer. I saw them playing ping-pong. I saw them playing ... I think it was volleyball," he said.
(snip)

"And in regards to the health care, my word, they have better health care than many of my small communities in Kansas."

1. I can't believe people like this.
Do you think this guy would be willing to go to prison indefinitely, without being charged with a crime, without access to a lawyer, without any prospect of a fair trial, just so long as he was fed and got to play ping-pong?

4. The famous Red Cross Visit to Theresienstadt...
<snip>
This visit to Theresienstadt by the Red Cross was by no means the only visit to a Nazi camp, but it is the one that is the most written about because the Nazis used the occasion to disseminate propaganda by presenting the ghetto in a most favorable light. But even before the famous visit, the Germans had been honoring the 1929 Geneva Convention which required them to allow the Red Cross to provide packages to the concentration camps. The Red Cross was aware of the camps from the beginning of the war and they began sending packages to the inmates of the major Nazi concentration camps, starting in August 1942; by February 1943 the Red Cross was sending packages to all the Nazi concentration camps. From the Autumn of 1943 to May 1945, the Red Cross distributed 1,112,000 packages containing 4,500 tons of food to the Nazi concentration camps, including the Theresienstadt ghetto and the Auschwitz death camp. In addition, the Nazis allowed packages to be sent to the concentration camp prisoners from friends and relatives outside the camps.

And just in case it offends someone:

14. That was my first thought
I've even seen old propaganda films of children playing soccer in Theresienstadt.

History may not repeat itself, but sometimes it rhymes (to paraphrase Mar Twain).

5. And of course, all of this begs the question:

Why won't they let independent human rights organizations come in to audit the camp? So far, we can only go by the word of the Pentagon and the White House (who, if there is torture and other abuses going on, would obviously have an interest in lying about it) and the word of various Senators and officials who have been given an extremely limited tour of the camp.

EDIT: I forgot, we also have the reports from FBI interviews of former detainees... which of course all allege abuses. But those are being ignored/swept under the rug because they're all dirty Ay-rab turrsts.

8. BushCo says these are real bad guys. Why are we treating them like kings?
We can torture them because they are bad guys, or so the right wingnuts keep rationalizing. If they are such bad guys per those wingnuts, why are the wingnuts now declaring we are treating them to resort-like conditions?

12. People in Hitler's concentration camps played baseball.
That doesn't mean they weren't tortured/executed.

15. Oh, Pat, you silly boy
"And in regards to the health care, my word, they have better health care than many of my small communities in Kansas." WHAT?! Ohmygawd, it just keeps getting worse. What an indictment against health care in Kansas! HIS Kansas, no less. What a silly boy

In any event, I've always wanted to visit Cuba; perhaps Club Gitmo takes reservations.
