Prisoners escape US Afghan base
Four "dangerous enemy combatants" have escaped from the main US base in Afghanistan, a US spokesman says.

The men escaped from Bagram air base, north of Kabul, at about 0500 (0030 GMT), said Lt-Col Jerry O'Hara.

"We have on operation to recover four individuals who escaped from our detention facility," he said. He would not say how the men escaped.

2. Four militants escape U.S. Afghan detention center
By David Brunnstrom

KABUL (Reuters) - Four dangerous militants escaped on Monday from the main American military base in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said, a fresh embarrassment for U.S. forces struggling to contain a worsening Islamic insurgency.

An extensive search, involving ground forces backed by helicopters, was under way for the men reported missing at about 5 a.m. (0030 GMT) from the detention center at Bagram Air Base to the north of Kabul, the military said in a statement.

Arabic television channel al Jazeera quoted unidentified sources as saying the four men were Arabs, but U.S. military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jerry O'Hara declined to confirm this, describing them only as "dangerous enemy combatants."

The escape is the first known from the heavily guarded detention center, which is within the sprawling Bagram base, and as such a major embarrassment for the U.S. military.

Antony Lineberger left Treasure Island six weeks ago to drive fuel tankers across Afghanistan. He had been trying to get a job with Halliburton for more than nine months.

..cut...

They told him he would be working the overnight shift: 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. He showed up for his shift a half-hour early. He wanted to check out his truck, look at his map and learn his route. He found his name on the list, under Services Department. "Antony Lineberger: Driver - SST."

He didn't know what that meant, so the guys who had been there for a while enlightened him. SST: S-- Sucking Truck

..cut...

A half-mile past the last lines of tents, rows of barbed wire fencing appeared, rolling across the desert. The truck stopped outside a chained gate. "You go on inside," Lineberger said the guys told him. "We'll hand you the hose."

Bewildered, Lineberger climbed out of the tanker. A military police officer appeared and unlocked a tall gate. He stepped aside so Lineberger could slide through with the hose. Lineberger followed the guard along the fence, through another locked door.

When the guard opened the enclosure, dozens of dark eyes swiveled to stare. A room full of bearded men in orange jumpsuits were squatting on the floor, scowling.

..more at article....

This is a good read and just like the Army, do not believe the recuiters....

16. This guy was a Halliburton employee

As per the article...

Antony Lineberger left Treasure Island six weeks ago to drive fuel tankers across Afghanistan. He had been trying to get a job with Halliburton for more than nine months.

After 14 years of hauling fuel to boats around Tampa Bay, he longed to see the Middle East, have a little adventure, make some real money, help out his country.

The 42-year-old registered Libertarian had cut off his waist- length ponytail, given up his apartment, stored his furniture, sold his share of the family business and left his old dog with a friend."

So he got a job hosing toilets for Halliburton money? No sympathy from this quarter! I hope the MPs got a good laugh at this guy's expense.

8. Suppose this is a US trap?
Edited on Mon Jul-11-05 10:25 AM by Toots
Arabs not Afghans. Why are there Arabs in Afghanistan? I realize that Bin Laden is an Arab but most, I would bet all, Arabs have left the country. If four "escaped" Arabs seek protection they will find Bin Laden sypathizers and possibly even Bin Laden himself. I suspect spies. A team of four on escape and evasion. Sounds SF to me. Not that I am knocking the plan if this is one but I question everything. It is a decent plan IMHO.

9. Four escape from US army base (Afghanistan)

11/07/2005 13:31 - (SA)

Kabul - Four suspected terrorists escaped on Monday from the main US base in Afghanistan, the first time anyone has broken out of the heavily guarded detention facility, sparking a massive ground and air search, officials said.

"They are considered dangerous and are suspected terrorists. That is why they were detained initially," said military spokesperson, Lt Cindy Moore.

The four are from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Libya, said Kaber Ahmad, the government chief in Bagram town, which is adjacent to the vast US base by the same name, and whose security forces are helping in the search.

12. 4 Terror Suspects Escape U.S. Afghan Base
KABUL, Afghanistan - Four suspected terrorists escaped Monday from the main U.S. base in Afghanistan, the first time anyone has broken out of the heavily guarded detention facility, sparking a massive ground and air search, officials said.

"They are considered dangerous and are suspected terrorists. That is why they were detained initially," a U.S. military spokeswoman, Lt. Cindy Moore, told The Associated Press.

The four are Arabs from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Libya, said Kaber Ahmad, the government chief in Bagram, which is adjacent to the vast U.S. base by the same name, and whose security forces are helping in the search.

"Coalition forces, police and Afghan troops have surrounded several villages near the base," Ahmad said. Photos of the four, who have short hair and long beards and were wearing yellow prison clothes, were distributed, he said.
