US forces lift London travel ban

The US military has rescinded an order to its personnel to avoid
London in the aftermath of the bombings.

Personnel, most of them from US Air Force units at RAF Mildenhall and
RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk, were told last week not to go within the
M25 motorway.

But there was criticism that it sent out the wrong signals at a time
when the emphasis was on "business as usual" in London after the
attacks.

The US embassy said the order had been reviewed and had now been lifted.

4. No, I can't take the credit for this - you should see the derision
and disbelief expressed on various other forums I have been reading.

3. Looks as if UK-based US commanders were over-ruled by superiors
based at a safe distance away, in Belgium!

The Commander of US Forces in Europe, General James L. Jones, based at Mons in Belgium, said in a statement: "<We have> lifted all travel restrictions for US personnel stationed in the United Kingdom. "

7. Not quite true - Blair lives 'over the office'
at 10 Downing Street, and gets government cars for travel. The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, does take the Tube though (time was, his main concern was getting the damn thing to run properly).

8. Yes, I once found Ken Livingstone on a bus, in 1992
I sat down next to him and talked to him.

10. Blair had a photo-op in the subway that I saw...
Granted, it's a one-off, but so is the night on the town for an airman.

11. There was a statement from the Battle of Gettysburg
when a general was riding back and forth behind the line exhorting his men, his adjutant asked him to get down out of fire. He said, "Sometimes the life of a corps commander is unimportant."

That, I think, is where the Queen is. With one gesture she out-manlied the bluster and braggadocio of Bush, who closes down entire towns even as he pretends to have a charm offensive, who sends troops to Iraq as bait for terrorists.
