Air Force officials Tuesday lifted travel restrictions for its personnel to London, though not before a string of negative and sarcastic comments in the British press.

The barbs by journalists and politicians followed a weekend in which hundreds of thousands of Britons defied fears of another possible terrorist attack to attend crowded ceremonies marking the end of World War II. The Daily Mail newspaper said in an editorial: “We trust the 4 million Americans who come to London each year are made of sterner stuff than the U.S. Air Force.”

While British royals, war veterans and regular folks attended the events, Londoners awoke Tuesday to read in the local press that U.S. airmen stationed 70 miles northeast of the capital still were prohibited from traveling to London, except to go to the airport. The U.S. Navy, which has personnel stationed in London, let its 72-hour ban expire on Sunday.

The ranking Air Force officer in the United Kingdom announced Tuesday that the ban was no more, saying the situation had “stabilized.”
