California lawmakers quietly drop explosive euthanasia law

LOS ANGELES, July 12 (AFP) - Legislators in California have shelved plans to push through a socially-explosive law that would allow doctors to help terminally-ill patients commit suicide, officials said Tuesday.

The Death With Dignity Act, which would have given dying patients the right to hasten their own deaths by taking a lethal but legally prescribed dose of medicine, was derailed, at least temporarily, by political opposition to the move.

The bill, which would have made California only the second US state to sanction euthanasia, failed to muster the 41 votes needed in the state assembly to pass it, its sponsors said.

"This is something we will not take up for rest of this legislative session," said Crystal Strait, communications director for Democratic state assemblyman Lloyd Levine who backed the bill.

1. So more people are condemned to suffer unnecessary pain and fear ...
.. to satisfy the self-righteousness of the God-botherers. Nice.

2. On of these days..............
the United States will enter into the 21st Century and discard all of the superstitions and taboos of the dark ages.
Until then, more people will suffer needlessly while conservative idiots crow about "the culture of life" ad nauseum.
Oregon is the only State progressive enough to see the handwriting on the wall, although there are rumors that it too shall repeal what some call a "barbaric law"
Letting someone die in excruciating pain is barbaric, letting them choose the time and circumstances of their death is not.

5. I fail to understand why
the fundie nutjobs are the only ones who get to say what happens around here? Is it because they scream the loudest?

If that's the case then we've become a nation of bad parents giving into the demands of our collective spoiled toddlers. Where's America's Nanny 911 when you need her?
