Watchdog group wants FDA to put health warnings on sodas

http://www.montereyherald.com/mld/montereyherald/news/politics/12124564.htm

"Sodas should follow alcohol and cigarettes and bear a federally mandated warning label detailing the dangers of consuming too many, a food watchdog group said Wednesday in filing a petition with the Food and Drug Administration.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has fought for clear nutrition labeling on foods and published information about the poor nutritional content of fast food, says Americans, especially young ones, are getting too much refined sugar from soft drinks.

Sweetened drinks are the "quintessential junk food: all calories, no nutrients," said Michael Jacobson, the executive director of the CSPI.

The CSPI also re-released its 1998 "Liquid Candy" report on soda consumption Wednesday, updated with the most recent government dietary data, from 1999 to 2002. While there had been a slight overall decline in the consumption of soft drinks, teens were drinking more sodas than ever, the CSPI found.

Uh oh. I am reminded of an old Faction tune:

"Headin' out we're gonna meet the crew
But first we stop, the boys want brew
No
They're under age, we wait and tap
An hour goes by I start to laugh
I laugh out loud
Let's go get Cokes
Anything else will make me choke
7-11 gulps are the best
I won't settle for anything less, I won't stand for anything less
Drink what you want, it's okay
But I'll take Cokes any tim of the day
"Hey mack, you wanna Pepsi?"
No way
Cokes are fun the fluid second to none
Drink those liter and go have fun."

3. High-fructose corn syrup is horrible for us.
I try to avoid soda for that reason now - I'm not a fan of genetically-modified high-FRUIT-sugar STARCH syrup.

I support labelling HFCS as a hazard to one's health.

7. Sodas contain phosphorus which depletes calcium in the bones
Too many sodas can cause osteoporosis. Not good for young people to develope this at such a young age.

10. They ought to warn against osteoporosis
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 07:48 PM by depakid
because most people DON'T KNOW that drinking this enough of this garbage over time will weaken anyone's bones. So it makes very logical sense to put a bright warning on the bottles-

Happened to my old man- drank 3-4 diet cokes a day for 20 years and his DEXA scan was 1 1/2 standard deviations away from what it should have been for his age. Contributed to a broken hip, too.

Diet sodas have a high acid content that the body must neutralize with alkaline substances, notably calcium carbonate, which is leached from the bones. Frequently, girls and young women have made matters worse by trading in milk and juice that would ordinarily promote healthy bone growth.

Not good- and there's nothing "nanny" about warning them that osteoporosis can AND will happen to them.

As far as public health is concerned, the "soft drink" manufacturers are no better than the tobacco companies.... and deserve no special quarter with respect to their products.

17. Indeed.
Thanks for the great descriptions of these "side effects" to prolonged, regular intake of too much soda pop.

16. I think this is good
but I am not a pop drinker. Something about knowing they can use that stuff to get corrosion off of a car battery has always made it seem rather disgusting to me.

18. I'm pretty sure that's a tall tale
Can't exactly remember, but I don't know anybody who's succesffuly done that, and I can't imagine there's enough of anything in coke to corrode anything. NOT to say it's not incredibly bad for you, I just don't buy theidea it can corrode battery acid or wood... teeth is the only thing I know about -and that's a prolonged affect. I don't know though, maybe I'm wrong...

19. I know a couple mechanics
who swear by it.

But even if it isn't true, there is acid in coke. And it's not the see pretty colors and laugh a lot after you take it acid.

20. Yeah, that's scary then.
There certainly is acid in coke, I would like to think that sort of acid is less harmful than the one you just described here, but there's no guarantee. As I put more thought into the contents of soda and te long terms affects of drinking it regularly, I give more consideration towards dumping the habit entirely. If I do though, I'll certainly have withdrawels. besides, it's such a fundamental part of my human growth!

:P
