TALLAHASSEE · In the six-and-half years that Jeb Bush has been Florida's governor, legislators have never overridden one of his vetoes.

Democrats in the Florida House of Representatives are hoping this is the year lawmakers strike back.

On Thursday, Democratic leaders from South Florida said they are taking steps to bring the Legislature into special session to override Bush vetoes of a throng of budget items. They also want to override his veto of a bill revamping how the state contracts with private companies.

Republican leaders and aides to the governor dismissed the move as unnecessary and unlikely to succeed. But Democratic Reps. Chris Smith of Fort Lauderdale and Dan Gelber of Miami Beach said it's vital that the Legislature reverse Bush's actions on key bipartisan-backed bills.
