Gen. MacArthur Statue Spawns Korea Protest
By VICTORIA KIM
Associated Press Writer

July 17, 2005, 4:22 PM EDT

INCHEON, South Korea -- Protesters hurled rocks, bottles and eggs during a clash Sunday over the legacy of U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who landed behind North Korean lines a half-century ago and led U.N. forces in an attack that turned the tide of the Korean War. <snip>

South Koreans are divided over whether MacArthur's memory should be revered or banished from the peninsula, a conflict that reflects the depth of anti-American feeling and resentment over the continuing U.S. military presence here. <snip>

The 15-foot-tall bronze statue was erected in 1957, four years after the end of the Korean war. It depicts MacArthur holding binoculars and wearing a cap, overlooking the sea where his troops came ashore.

Arguments for removing the statue surfaced in 2002 when two schoolgirls died in an accident involving a U.S. Army vehicle. Their deaths spurred a tide of anti-American sentiment, and police have guarded MacArthur's statue around the clock ever since. <snip>

2. We should pull every single US troop out, and revoke any pledge to come

to South Korea's defense. Let Kim Jong Il have the entire peninsula to himself.

No American lives are worth risking and no American tax dollars are worth spending on South Korea. And given that they hate our guts there anyways, it makes no sense to have a military presence there.

6. Maybe
But there aren't many combat generals who aren't assholes. He's a mixed bag, but I'm reasonably glad he was on our side. He wasn't a bad military strategist, even if he was an egomaniac and shameless self promoter.

7. And if he'd had his way Korean war would have went nuclear.
Luckily Truman already had two bombs on his conscience and nixed that bad idea.

8. This is true
What's even crazier is that Mao wanted to lure the American forces deep into Chinese territory and then wanted Russia to use nukes on our forces. That freaked the Russians out causing the freeze in Sino-Russian cooperation. Yikes.

9. Our present existence is as tenuous as our future is...

I'm an accident of history. I'm a sea turtle that has survived one in a thousand odds.
