Mayo protesters remain in jail (Shell pipeline / Ireland)

The five Mayo men jailed for failure to comply with a court order preventing them from interfering with the construction of a Shell gas pipeline have been sent back to prison once again. In court on Thursday, the five again refused to purge their contempt. In an effort to end the standoff Minister for Natural Resources Noel Dempsey had earlier ordered a further safety review of the pipeline project. However, a statement issued from the five men said that the new safety review would not go far enough. They maintain that the government and Shell had not given them full information about the core safety issues surrounding the pipeline, including an analysis of what would happen in the event of a leak or rupture on the pipeline. <snip>
