Congressman says bomb Mecca if US attacked
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=story_18-7-2005_pg1_8

WASHINGTON: A Republican congressman said in a radio interview aired by a Florida station that if a multiple-city attack happened in the United States in the next 90 days, as predicted by an Israeli expert, and was found to be the work of extremist Muslims, then “we should take out their holy sites.” Congressman Thomas G Tancredo, Republican from Colorado, was being interviewed by AM 540 WFLA radio host Pat Campbell, who asked him what the response of the United States should be were terrorist attacks on US cities to take place and were attributable to extremist Muslims. The Congressman replied, “ ... then we could take out their holy sites.” Asked if that meant Mecca, Tancredo answered, “Yes.” khalid hasan

"spreading and aiding terrorism". And I believe an existing Federal law covering "Hate Crimes" is also applicable.

It was obviously a slam on the French for objecting to the Iraq invasion (the whole "smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud" b-s). I'd like to see some of the cartoonists current work... perhaps an self-portrait, eating crow.

Well Not sure what was in his original post, (deleted one)
but I'm sure he took a strong principled stand for the long time position held by right wing wackos that anyone who dares to question U.S. authority should be nuked into a black glass parking lot.

We have the power, lets use it!! nuke all land not contained within the contiguous us states. It's reckoning time for Alaska and Hawaii, which are de facto commie strongholds!

61. Tancredo's Office
Should be flooded with calls, emails etc. demanding he apologize for such irreponsible comments. This is much more egregious than anything Sen. Durbin did. Tancredo's rubbish, if carried to fruition have the capacity to endanger our children and grandchildren's lives by embroiling them in a holy war with over a billion people.

How can such ignorance represent anyone or anything with more iq than a pet rock?

18. Ok I googled israel ninety days attack
and came up with this from fox news.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,161962,00.html
Counterterrorism expert Juval Aviv spoke with FOX Fan Central about what Americans can do to protect themselves in case of a terror attack.

Do you believe another terrorist attack is likely on American soil?

I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most.

Does anyone know anything about this Jual Aviv?
I know it is fox but things are getting hot for the administration and it would not suprise me if something was in the works.

in that fox is their mouthpiece. I was asking if anyone knew anything about the security expert that was interviewed. The israelis have had a decent record on ferreting out this kind of info so I do not discount it just because it was on fox.
As I said in my previous post, I don't put anything past this administration and they are in very hot water right now.

Aviv is a former Israeli counterterrorism intelligence officer. He has 30 years experience in intelligence and security work, including time as a consultant for El Al. He also served as the lead investigator on the Pan American 103/Lockerbie terrorist bombing. Today, Aviv is the CEO of Interfor, Inc., an international company that specializes in corporate investigations and security.

52. There's no risk in making such predictions
If you're right, you look like a genius. If you're wrong, nobody remembers--and besides, you've erred on the side of cautious pessimism. There's been stuff "floating around" in Europe and the Middle East since U.S. troops were first based in Saudi Arabia for Gulf War I. That said, a multi-city attack in the US wouldn't surprise me--seems to me Bushco is utterly incapable of preventing any sort of soft-target attack in the US. Chertoff basically said it's up to the state and local governments to protect their own transportation infrastructure--DHS will handle air travel, but the rest is up to you guys. I read that as a preemptive strike in case of future attacks. If the NYC subway system or LA harbor or Disneyworld gets blown up, Bushco can say, "Hey, we told you--it ain't our job."

79. Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if the PNAC
crew let something like that happen to try and bolster their boy *'s numbers. Not to mention the tragic fact that * is bankrupting our country without properly funding real homeland security (ports, borders ,etc.).

I was thinking the other day maybe a few prominent Dems should keep those shortcomings on the front burner. If a few are on record as regularly trying to remind (media/congress/wherever) that more work needs to be done to prevent future attacks, that there is no reason terrorists can't attack us here as well as "over there" (particularly now that their recruitment #'s are way up thanks to Iraq, as is their funding I'm sure) and that there are now more terrorist attacks monthly than before we invaded Iraq (before 9/11?), even discounting those occurring _inside_ Iraq. This is a JIK measure, so that if something horrible does happen, the Dems can get right in front of it, saying "If only the WH didn't ignore our warnings, our efforts to improve security" yada yada.

57. I heard this guy on Art Bell
or whoever does his show nowadays (I have insomnia - I don't beleive it). Anyway, this guy wrote a book saying that there are between 12 and 60 nuclear weapons in the US already.

I don't beleive it.

However, this is an excellant way to sell books and should be considered as much.

The congressloon is actually referring to a mutually assurred destruction model against Islamists similar to what Isreal calls "The Sampson Option". (I know there was a book by that name many years ago and I am not an expert on Israeli nuclear policy. So if I am wrong please tell me). Any, Isreal has let it be known that if TelAviv gets nuked, the first nukes are heading to Mecca and Medinah and then the major population centers of the other countries and oil centers. No one doubts they would do it. That is why there has been no pan-Arab attack on Isreal since 73.

180. $3.50 of my .02 cents worth
Their are a coupla reasons why the evil Bush junta doesn't WANT to catch Osama. (And let's face it, they couldn't catch crabs in a cat house). First, It's like convincing the angry mob to go home and let Viktor Frankenstein catch the monster, i.e., it was bush the elder and his boss, ronnie ray-gun, that created osama, (and saddam for that matter), in the first place. Next of course is the fact that he can't scare you into his back pocket every time his poll numbers sag like granny clampett's bosom with his "boogie man" stories if we've all ready caught the boogie man and spanked his monkey. BUT the REAL copious pigeon dropping on the statue of the Virgin is the fact that our "allies" (or at least our "not enemies") in the global war on whatsis are playing tag-team harboring him, 'n' we can't afford to p*ss 'em off. Howzit go? "The enemy of my friend is my enemy; the friend of my enemy is my enemy; but the enemy of my enemy is going to rain terrorists on me and then hide with the enemies of his enemy, who'll be my friend... see? (My head hurts). Shit. Bombing Mecca is about the only thing we could do that could make things worse. Leave it to the obergruppenfuhrer... he could f*ck up a sack fulla re-bar!

and the Al-Aqsa mosque which are part of the Noble Sanctuary, the Al-Haram al-Sharif, in Jerusalem. They are the second holiest site of Islam!

Dropping JDAMS on the Noble Sanctuary, if our record in Iraq and Afghanistan holds true, will also mean killing all the Jews worshiping at the Western Wall.

14. He is an unwitting terrorist collaborator.
I recently finished Gwynne Dyer's "Future Tense" and he makes the point that the terrorists, having only limited means, depend on the overreaction of those terrorized, to further the terrorist's cause. Heavy-handed responses to terrorism alienate the societies from which the terrorists arise and encourage sympathies and recruitment for the terrorists. The congressman's remarks were foolish and he should correct them and apologize for them.

It would be interesting learning what possessed the show host to draw him into violent speculation about future nightmares to be visited upon Amuricans by yet more bloodthirsty, wild, uncontrollable, and heathen A-rabs.

Keeping this "enemy" hatred at the boiling point is crude, vile, and stupid. I don't get it. You'd think these bastards would wear themselves out threatening the world outside the U.S. around the clock.

Here's the genius who engineered this look into the mind of another great Republican statesman, Pat Campbell. His station boasts that you can hear the interview if you're motivated:

would be a nuclear attack on the United States.

Remeber Khalid Sheik Mohammed said AQ had nuclear weapons.

However, BFEE would rather make more money with conventional attacks driving up oil prices and the need for ever more conventional weapons. Their partners in crime love those holy sites. So this will never happen.

Instead of dropping a bomb, what say was drop Thomas G. Tancredo instead? And instead of dropping him on Mecca, how about someplace like the middle of the Rub al-Khali desert? I think that would be an appropriate response. And come to think of it, why wait until somebody attacks the United States? Pre-emptive Strikes and all of that. Let's drop Tancredo from a C-37 at a height of 40,000 feet just to prove to the Terrorists that we mean business. I'm sure that as a patriotic American, Tancredo would be the first to volunteer.

60. Hey, its crude, but deterrence could work.
Sorry, but deterrence really could work. For example, the threat of massive retaliation kept both the US and the USSR from attacking each other for 50 years. It was literally a form of terrorism, strategic nuclear weapons held the civilian populations of each country hostage.

Right now, deterrence is working in preventing attacks on the US by any NATION. We can dismantle any nation that attacks us with conventional force.

The terrorists cannot be deterred because they are not a nation.

This proposal is, to me, worthwhile. It would also, I point out, give other, non-terrorist muslims, a good reason to do somemthing about the terrorists in their midst.

Area of Interest: War on Terrorism

I read about your remark that if a multiple-city attack occurred in the US, and was found to be the work of extremist Muslims, the US should "take out their holy sites."

This was a stupid and inflammatory remark that I think you need to apologize for. If this remark was the suggestion of one of your staff members, you need to fire that person. If it was your own idea, you need to learn to think through the consequences of such irresponsible remarks.

108. My email to the congressman...
Congressman,

I'd like to respond to your comments re: "bombing religious sites" in retaliation for an attack on the US.
I am appalled at your knee-jerk, revenge-motivated suggestion to bomb sites considered holy to Muslims. Given that the terrorists are extremists - representing 1% of 1% of the 1.2 *billion* Muslims on the planet - I find your remarks to be inflammatory and inappropriate.
Isn't it time to work for peace instead of playing tit-for-tat political games of Risk with real lives? How many soldiers do you think you put in danger with your remarks? How many times do you think your sound clip will be played in the "terrorist training camps" and used to enrage a whole new generation of extremist?
I shudder to think.

Congressman, I urge you to retract your statements, but at the same time, believe that the damage is irreparable.

They even have little graphics of it happening.

What they don't understand is- let's say we do retaliate for a terror attack by nuking Mecca. How will the terrorists then respond? Probably by attacking a christian holy site, the most obvious one being the Vatican, or by a devastating attack on Jerusalem or a large american city. Nuking Mecca will not stop terror attacks. Tracking down terrorists will.

First, take it to MSM, pound them with calls, emails and so on. With reference to the chinese General who talked about Nukes & Taiwan.

Second, take it to the local papers. If Tancredo is re-elected 2006, something went wrong after this.

Third, find some good & friendly slogans, like "Tancredo cares about our military, he put's every soldier in danger"

Fourth, don't give up, one mail is not enough, do a second round 2-3 days later.

Use this to out the "spirit" of the GOP. And never forget: a drop of water is nothing, thousand waterdrops form a river, a lake, the sea.....

141. "...predicted by an Israeli expert"
If I recall correctly, wasn't Israel one of the countries whose intelligence agencies were warning us of the impending 9/11 attacks?

The Israeli intelligence service chose to pass on its own intelligence to Washington through its contacts in French and Egyptian intelligence agencies because it did not believe its previous warnings on an impending attack by the bin-Laden network had been taken seriously enough in Washington.

We didn't listen to them then, why listen to them now?

99. I wonder how this plays across the cultural divide?
I mean, all the mouthing of nice multicultural and tolerant platitudes is frequently taken as a sign of weakness. Baghdad Bob's outrageous statements were taken as more interesting, and presumably of higher credibility, than mere factual statements because they were couched in culturally correct language; he dissed the US, and the US responded with remarkably level, non-face-saving jargon.

And I don't mean what kind of words do official and unofficial sources say in response to it, or what do Americans believe the proper or likely Middle Eastern response will be. I mean, what kind of effect will it actually have on conservative Muslims' attitudes and future actions? (Keeping in mind the usual 'Think one thing, say nother, and do a third" kind of behavior I've come to expect from many, many people.)

120. Did anyone read the story? Hello, McFly?
Okay, he was asked a hypothetical question. The question was, what should we do if the US suffers a multiple-city NUCLEAR attack. What should we do if several of our cities are attacked with nuclear weapons.

He's not talking about a car bomb, a hijacked plane, anything trivial.

Oh, but you all would have us do what in those circumstances? Call up the terrorists and apologize for whatever we did that offended them?

I'd be inclined toward Mecca as a target. Its a better target than Iraq or even afghanistan. Saudi Aarabia is after all the primary financial suppoorter of Al Quead and the primary provider of manpower.

In the country I was born in, we did not even think about bombing holy sites and places of worship. In fact we tried to prevent them from happening in our country<1960's history is a good reference> I see you have joined the New America. We never considered civilians worshipping as the enemy, and we sure the fuck would not bomb them. So please take the McFly statement and place it where it belongs.

149. Actually, there probably WOULD be a bit of that.
It's undoubtable that if a Muslim terrorist destroyed the Vatican or killed the Pope, that some Catholic paramilitary terrorist groups would pop up and start attacking Muslims. It would be something along the lines of the IRA on a global scale.

Catholicism in the US and Europe is fairly mellow, but there are still large parts of the world where Catholics are fairly rabid about their faith. The problem, at that point, would be escalation...a situation like that could go from terrorist strike to WWIII in nothing flat.

151. Rep. Johnson, R-Texas, ~March 1, 2005 - NUKE SYRIA!
This is not the first time a rethug congresscritter has called out for the nuking of a middle east city. Recall the words of Rep Johnson, spoken at the annual veterans' appreciation breakfast at the Suncreek United Methodist Church in Allen, TX, captured on tape, and reported by The Washington Roll Call and by TODD J. GILLMAN of The Dallas Morning News - and previously posted to DU.

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/nation/stories/030405dnnatjohnson.191a9.html

"Syria is the problem," the former fighter pilot said at a pancake breakfast at Suncreek United Methodist Church in Allen. "Syria is where those weapons of mass destruction are, in my view. You know, I can fly an F-15, put two nukes on 'em, and I'll make one pass. We won't have to worry about Syria anymore."

I sent a letter to the minister, Rev. Kathleen Baskin-Ball, but never got a reply.

Congressman Says He Doesn't Advocate Bombing Mecca

POSTED: 9:36 pm EDT July 18, 2005
UPDATED: 9:40 pm EDT July 18, 2005

DENVER -- Colorado U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo said he was talking about deterrence when he raised the possibility of bombing Mecca if Muslim terrorists set off nuclear weapons in American cities.

On a Florida radio show Friday, Tancredo was asked what the response should be to a nuclear attack on U.S. cities. He answered that if fundamentalist Muslims were to blame, "you could take out their holy sites." When he was asked if he meant bombing Mecca, the congressman said, "Yeah."

But in a statement issued Sunday, Tancredo said he was talking about a making a threat that might deter such an attack, insisting: "I do not advocate this."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has asked to meet with the congressman and is urging the Republican Party to repudiate his remarks.
