LONDON BOMBS: STRAW DISMISSES CLAIMS THAT IRAQ MADE UK A TARGET

Brussels, 18 July (AKI) - Britain's foreign secretary has dismissed suggestions that the London bombings on July 7 were prompted by the UK's participation in the war in Iraq. "The time for excuses for terrorism is over," Straw said. "The terrorists have struck across the world, in countries allied with the United States, backing the war in Iraq and in countries which had nothing whatever to do with the war in Iraq," he told journalists, listing Turkey, Kenya, Indonesia, Yemen and Tanzania as examples of those not involved in Iraq.

His statements came as a new report published by Britain's leading think tank on foreign affairs, Chatham House, said the UK's involvement in both Iraq and Afghanistan contributed to the London bombings. When it comes to fighting terrorism, the report said Britain's main problems arise from the fact that it is "riding as a pillion passenger with the United States in the war against terror." It concluded that there was "no doubt" that the invasion of Iraq has "given a boost to the al-Qaeda network" in "propaganda, recruitment and fundraising", while providing an ideal targeting and training area for terrorists.

3. You know these people are lying when they say things like this.
Mr. Straw is an intelligent man. He knows the difference between "excuses for terrorism" and reasons for terrorism. This is a talking point. Sure there are other reasons for bombings around the world. But this one just happened to be done partly, at least, due to Britain's role in Iraq. Britain has had a role in the Middle East in the past. Why can't the Brits just stand up and say the truth. So what if their actions in Iraq led to this. Don't they think their support of the U.S. is worth some blood, sweat, and tears? You would think that Mr. Straw regrets British support of America. Why else would he lie about this? (I think Blair and Straw are crazy to have put Britain with the U.S. on this, of course.)

The International Executive Service Corps has launched a new program, ALINC. The program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is designed to increase awareness of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA - http://www.agoa.gov) among key stakeholders within AGOA eligible Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) states and to stimulate exports of eligible products. While AGOA serves as a catalyst for increasing exports from eligible Sub-Saharan African countries to the United States, ALINC is designed to accelerate completion of export trade transactions between African sellers and US buyers.

US, Tanzania AGOA efforts starting to pay-off
March 19, 2004

By Gerwin Faya

In its three years since the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was passed into law by the US Congress, the Act has set the stage for dramatic economic growth for Sub-Saharan countries. Some countries have made dramatic gains, but Tanzanian businessmen and women have yet to take full advantage of the AGOA vision, according to U.S. and Tanzanian sources.

But one company has seized the opportunities represented by AGOA and by the Government of Tanzania's Export Processing Zone policies: Star Apparels (T) Ltd. manufactures apparel for the export market, specifically the US market, and it is experiencing dramatic results.

Yemen

"Security remains a concern of foreign firms doing business in Yemen, particularly after the French-flagged oil tanker Limburg was attacked off the coast of Yemen on October 6, 2002. Kidnappings of foreigners, including oil workers, have been a problem. There have also been periodic attacks on an oil pipeline in the Marib region of eastern Yemen, which is operated by U.S.-based Hunt Oil."
