Detention method defended
Responding to complaints of mistreatment in custody, federal prosecutors argue that two Muslim men awaiting a 2006 trial in South Florida's biggest terrorism case should remain in solitary confinement at the Federal Detention Center in Miami.

''It is a matter of public record that the defendants hold Osama bin Laden in high esteem,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell Killinger claimed in a new court filing.

The government's strong accusations come in response to complaints by Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi that they have been mistreated in their closet-like cells. According to prosecutors, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons must keep them in isolation for their safety.

'For example, {the government} claims the defendants associated with al Qaeda and holds Osama bin Laden in `high esteem,' '' -- without any factual evidence to back it up, their attorneys, Kenneth Swartz and William Swor, said in court papers filed last week......

Indeed, a review of court records shows no direct evidence linking the pair's Muslim charity work to bin Laden or al Qaeda.......

1. Last time I checked, it wasn't illegal to 'hold someone in high esteem'.
