Rumsfeld can't name end date for U-S occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan

PENTAGON Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says progress in Iraq has been "a few steps forward, and a step back."

Rumsfeld says nation-building "is not easy stuff" -- especially since Iraqis have had such little experience with representative government. Still, he says most Iraqis are "confident in the legitimacy of what's taking place, and in the future."

Rumsfeld says there will be an end date for the U-S occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan -- but he can't say when. He says coalition members have no "appetite to occupy another country." He says they seek nothing other than to assist Iraq and Afghanistan on the path to democracy.

2. But it was supposed to be a cakewalk
It would last months, certainly not years. Now it looks like decades. Rummy's new motto: "Decades, certainly not centuries".

4. First it was months, with thrown roses and open arms and legs...
Then it's "12 years" and no mention of grateful young Iraqi women wanting a GI Joe husband.

Now........"He can't say when...."
Maybe he's thinking "When the last Iraqi Insurgent (freedom fighter) is DEAD."
