Bush: New Formula for Keeping his Word?; Statement from the DNC

WASHINGTON, July 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement today:

Faced with a question about whether or not he will keep his promise to fire those involved in leaking the identity of an undercover CIA agent while we are at war, President Bush backed away from his initial pledge and lowered the ethics bar. With several sources now citing Rove and Libby as two sources of the leaks, Bush should be prepared to keep his word, and to enforce a high standard of ethics in the White House as he promised from the beginning of his administration.

THEN:

McClellan: "If anyone in this administration was involved in it (the improper disclosure of an undercover CIA operative's identity), they would no longer be in this administration." (White House Press Briefing, 9/29/2003)

Bush: "If somebody did leak classified information, I'd like to know it, and we'll take the appropriate action." (President Bush, Chicago, Ill, 9/30/2003)

NOW:

"If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration." (President Bush, 7/18/05)

White House Denials in CIA Leak Probe

By The Associated Press
Sun Jul 17, 3:25 PM ET

Previous denials by White House spokesman Scott McClellan that Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, and presidential political adviser Karl Rove were involved in leaking the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame. Reporters posed the questions during White House briefings.

Oct. 7, 2003

Q. Scott, you have said that you personally went to Scooter Libby, Karl Rove and Elliott Abrams to ask them if they were the leakers. Is that what happened? Why did you do that? And can you describe the conversations you had with them? What was the question you asked?

McClellan: Unfortunately, in Washington, D.C., at a time like this there are a lot of rumors and innuendo. There are unsubstantiated accusations that are made. And that's exactly what happened in the case of these three individuals. They are good individuals. They are important members of our White House team. And that's why I spoke with them, so that I could come back to you and say that they were not involved. I had no doubt with that in the beginning, but I like to check my information to make sure it's accurate before I report back to you, and that's exactly what I did.

5. This goofup reminds me of "The Animal Farm"
"Four legs good two legs bad" said the sheep.
Then the hogs learned to walk like humans so the sheep bleated, "Four legs good, two legs better"

6. "If someone committed a crime..."
"If someone committed a crime, they will no longer work in my administration."

DUH! You can't hold down a White House job from prison!

Although, this administration may attempt to do so...

This is an obvious attempt at the White House to give up responsibility or making a stand, you don't have to fire someone if they're being hauled off to jail, you can just sweep it under the carpet.

It kind of reminds me of The Simpsons episode where Lisa and Bart are fighting, Lisa kicks the air as she's walking towards Bart, as he punches the air while walking towards Lisa, both stating "if you get hit, it's not my fault."

our side - Harry Reid would know, he who dared call the idiot son a loser and a liar - nail bush for what he is: A clammy-handed, giggling murderer who is a complete COWARD. If this weasel can find a way to run away on any issue he does.

12. "Appropriate action"? Yuh, sure. What, a promotion and a pay raise?
Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 04:00 PM by Zorra
To Bu*h, "appropriate action" toward republicans committing criminal acts done in the service of promoting Bu*h fascism and destroying democracy in America means, at the very least, granting immunity from prosecution and bestowing a huge life pension with perks.

Good call by the DNC though.

Glad to see that they are reading DU.

19. "You may not like what he stands for but you know were he stands."
Remember this bit of BushSpin from the presidential campaign?

Trouble is he keeps backing away from where he stands, and it keeps changing as the truth surfaces. No wonder he was continually quoted on the Sun news shows as saying "We're going to wait until the investigation runs its course." Even that was a Big Backup from the "fire anyone that was involved" place where he stood back when.

Now apparently waiting "until the investigation runs its course" no longer means until indictments are issued. Big Backup and Wiggle Room Flip-Flop shifty switches this to someone commiting a crime.

You know how long it took for Ken Starr to find any kind of crime? ANS: the best part of two terms. THEN there's the appeals process all the way up to the Supreme Court before you can say SOMEONE COMMITTED A CRIME. And what do you know for sure you're getting on the Supreme Court? Scalia and Thomas for openers. (Maybe this is a good framing point for the next Supreme Court nomination process.)

And there are so many someones who committed crimes (who's funding this "investigation?") I'm betting the Second Coming comes in first (as in fact I'm sure the Rove crowd is betting)before there's a final determination that someone committed a crime.
