Killer used posh perfume in bomb
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,15974458%255E663,00.html

ONE of the London terrorists bought more than $2000 worth of designer perfume as a deadly napalm-style ingredient in the bombs. Just three days before the carnage, Jamaican-born Jermaine Lindsay bought dozens of bottles of scent that investigators believe were to make the bombs more flammable.

They included Jean Paul Gaultier, Fahrenheit, Emporio Armani and Boss brands -- all symbols of what Islamist extremists consider the height of Western decadence. Investigators believe the perfumes were used to maximise the number of burns victims in the attacks, which killed at least 55 people, including Australian Sam Ly.

"The active ingredient in any perfume is alcohol," said terror expert Dr Andrew Silke.

"The effect would be more incendiary, like napalm, rather than highly explosive. It would create more fire and therefore more burn injuries."

It's cheaper, has a high alcohol content, and I'm pretty sure would get their message acrossed just as well. Then again, maybe it's a crock of shit altogether.

without drawing suspicion?

of course, at the rate it's going, gasoline purchases of that amount to fill the hummer one day might not seem unusual.

Shoot, 16 oz of rubbing alcohol is less than a dollar--how much for those perfumes? $35+ per ounce?

10. Anyone whos ever read the Anarchists Cookbook...
Should know that its pretty easy to make real napalm! By easy I mean extremely dangerous and crazy. Is that .txt still around, or is it on the patriot act banned books list? In fact, by mentioning it, will I become a FBI target :)

I printed that thing out one day in HS about 8 years ago. It was an interesting read. Somehow I think determined, trained, and crazy terrorists could learn how to make a little better product than "designer perfume". GAG!

Edited on Mon Jul-18-05 11:44 PM by daleo
This seems way over the top. Isn't this a Murdoch source?

On edit - Now, if the Pentagon was to make a bomb like this, spending $2000 on perfume instead of $20 on alcohol would make perfect sense.

19. More than likely he bought the pefumes to re-sell. A lot of Jamaicans
do that. Why buy expensive perfume when regular gin or rum would do the trick? And they are much more a symbol of western decadence than perfume. We are grasping at straws here. None of what they are saying about the alleged bombers makes any sense whatsoever.

wasn't going to be around to re-sell them. Therefore, he must have needed them for the bomb. See? Process of elimination.

or he resold them to take care of his mother after he is gone....

Short list for elimination eliminates likely possibilities.

25. The source seems to be The Mirror in the UK
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=15747958&method=full&siteid=94762&headline=7-7--war-on-britain--scent-from-hell----name_page.html

which isn't Murdoch, but has plenty of reliability issues of its own. It does specify the shops he went to. It also says his bank was investgating the unusual spending patterns.

Using perfume in a bomb a stunningly stupid thing to to do me - while it seems a lot of perfumes do have more alcohol than spirits, it'd be far cheaper to use methylated spirits. I'd wonder if he was just running up a credit card bill (with something he could easily and quickly sell on), if the stories are correct.

Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 06:51 AM by NuttyFluffers
Honestly, how dumb does the media who spout this shit think we are? Bombers care about oblique symbolic aesthetics over efficiency and damage now. Yeah-huh, sure, ok, I buy that.

30. "Performance Arsonists"?
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 07:37 AM by Bridget Burke
One episode of "Due South" featured an inmate of an institution for the criminally insane & his girlfriend on the outside. He was "in" for setting fires (as artistic statements) & she was following in his footsteps.

What accelerant did they use? Perfume!

27. I'm missing something here..
... because I have no problem at all believing this.

Ever see the ads these perfume makers run? I'm anything but a prude but I find them more or less sickening - and not just from a "sexual" standpoint.

It's not a question of what would be more effective, of course you could use any number of flammable liquids, every American has them around the house - it MIGHT be what the whole "terrorism" thing is about - the encroaching of Westernism on countries that don't want it.
