"Governors rip feds over new ID cards" |
|
The National Governors Conference is being held in Des Moines last week and part of this week. The Governors are unhappy about the new National ID act.
Des Moines- "Many of the nation's governors blasted new federal rules for identification cards will cause a huge spike in the cost of driver's licenses and force motor vehicle departments to act like law enforcement agencies. The issue was a top concern at the National Governor's Association meeting in Des Moines, where governors met Monday in a closed-door session with Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff." Wish someone would have thought of that earlier, before it got stuffed into another bill, one that has to do with funding our troops, I believe. But at least Democrats as well as Republican Governors are raising some doubts about it. Maybe something will be done about it now. After all, Representatives and Senators often meet with their respective governors. www.qctimes.net/articles/2005/07/19/news/local/doc42dc8725254be0095636649.txt or just go to the front page. It's right there.

4. No, there was a thread on this yesterday I think |
|
And it's early in the day.
I find it interesting that the governors are balking on grounds of law enforcement. Perhaps they're angling for Homeland Security funding.

2. this plan will blow up in their faces . . . |
|
just wait until people have to provide two forms of ID -- generally including a birth certificate -- and then wait while the state VERIFIES their authenticity in order to get their drivers licenses . . . DMVs are already notoriously inefficient and slow . . . when this takes effect, the voting populace will rise up and raise holy hell . . . just wait and see . . .

5. Whenever they stuff something ilke this into a bill. . . |
|
I've always thought that Democrats should one-up their "I Dare You To Vote Against The Troops" trick. Slap on a vague a rider that requires every American to have health coverage by 2010. Dare them to vote against it. Too bad we don't have the votes to actually get anything done.

7. I agree-we are all going to have to get passports to go to Canada, anyways |
|
Make the passports a kind of voluntary national id, instead of putting the burden on the states. That way, the people crossing the borders will pay for their fancy, high-tech ids and the rest of us can carry our driver's licenses.

18. Not your medical records and financial records. |
|
THINK about what this implies instead of playing the "it's already happening" game. It's NOT already happening or they would not have needed this legislation.

10. I agree-- the feds are inching closer all the time |
|
The bad part is that when the subject comes up in local conversations the prevailing thought is "We have a national ID card,it's called our drivers license." When I point out that you are not required to obtain one or carry it at all times on your person they go quiet. The sheep are going quietly to slaughter.

11. You know - I am for ID cards. But the worrier in me wonders if this |
|
isn't just another way to "starve the beast". If there is an extra tax on the rich (a progressive one) to pay for this fine. But if it has to come out from State Coffers... that does worry me. Why shouldn't the whole thing be paid for federally?
Does anyone know?
