Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 12:42 PM by hopein08
does anyone know if CBS will be carrying it live? My cable was out last Saturday so I missed Big Brother 6 and I don't particularly want to miss it again, especially for the Chimp. And I suppose if CBS carries it, NBC will too, which will make me miss part of I Want To Be A Hilton!

26. CBS will be carrying "Big Brother 7" starring the "President"

Anyone know if he will take questions after the announcement? A good question re Rove would be perfect to spoil this little sideshow.

52. Or how about the question....
"Mr. President, do you deny that you are making this announcement in primetime at a date much earlier than expected in order to take attention of you recent flip-flopping on what would constitute firing a member of your administration regarding the CIA leak? And does that answer come in your own words or the words of Mr. Rove himself?"

I know...crazy, but I think it would be great.

18. Press has little choice in the matter, the SC nomination is big news
And if the nominee is controversial enough the Democrats will be forced to react which will also be news. That story could dominate news for weeks.

8. AP link: Bush to Announce Court Nominee Tonight
By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer
4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush has made his decision about whom he plans to nominate to take Sandra Day O'Connor's place on the Supreme Court and will announce his pick to the nation in a prime-time address Tuesday night.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the Bush administration was asking television outlets to broadcast the speech live across the country. Bush's spokesman would not identify the president's choice. But there was intense speculation Tuesday that it would be Judge Edith Clement of the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans.

Has a president ever made a live announcement of a SC nominee? What would be the purpose of doing this other than deflecting from Plamegate? This reminds me of his weak "speech" about stem cells before 9/11.

19. Sure it's a distraction but it doesn't matter
because the investigation goes on as before.

What gets me is all the recent talk from the WH about how Bush hadn't made up his mind yet re replacing O'Connor, he was getting input from both parties, yadda, yadda, yadda. I'm sure no one here believes Bush hasn't had his short list since 1999 if not before.

27. Edith Clement
Edited on Tue Jul-19-05 01:09 PM by HR_Pufnstuf
from N'awlins is a top candidate.

"Edith Brown Clement, 57, is a judge on the New Orleans-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.

Judge Edith Brown Clement
Clement was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to serve as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in 1991 and was elevated to her current post by the current President Bush in 2001.

Clement, a graduate of the University of Alabama and Tulane University Law School, worked as a lawyer in private practice in New Orleans for 16 years before beginning her tenure on the federal bench. She specialized in civil litigation involving maritime law, representing oil companies, insurance companies and the marine services industry in cases before federal courts. She is a member of the Federalist Society, an influential conservative legal organization.

As a district judge, Clement presided over such high-profile cases as the 2000 trials of former Louisiana governor Edwin W. Edwards (D) and former state insurance commissioner Jim Brown (D) on fraud charges. Edwards was acquitted; Brown was convicted of lying to the FBI and sentenced to six months in prison.

Lawyers who know Clement or have tried cases before her describe her as a judicial conservative who leans toward the defense in civil cases, and as a no-nonsense judge who is strict about deadlines and insists on professionalism from lawyers.

Analysts say Clement has not attracted attention for her judicial opinions, so it is unclear which of her decisions, if any, might become the focus of a confirmation battle."

Repukes want us to foam at the mouth and look bad attacking this person till kingdom come, IMO. You know they already started running ads saying "Democrats will attack ANYONE the pResident nominates"... I'd hate to prove them right unless its a real scumbag.

Besides, Bush is going to get who he wants unless the person is absolute poison. We can at least wait to see who the nominee will be.

43. All this is very amusing....
moron* mentioned just two days ago, that he would wait as long as october to nominate someone.

then the heat on puke face rove boils up then suddenly, moron* has to accelerate his schedule. Now he's going to name a person.

Funny how that works huh?

They are trying desperately to derail the rove investigation, I imagine he will nominate someone that will be very controversial so it takes up a lot of face time on the networks, thus distracting the sheeples attention. He will nominate this person, knowing full well they won't get approved. he will feign all sorts of surprise and indignation as to why the Democrats are giving him such a hard time etc., but in the end, he won't give a shit, it will do it's job. then the real nomination will come later this year. By which point, they hope, people will be looking at the rove case as old news. Problem is, the rove case is constantly being updated with new shit almost every day.

Unless, there is something truly controversial about his nomination, such as, this person approved ceremonial sacrifices, the rove news will continue to trump anything they put out.

50. It helps take Rove off the front pages for a week/Republican strategist
Sources said the timing of an announcement had been moved up in part to deflect attention away from a CIA leak controversy that has engulfed Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove.

"It helps take Rove off the front pages for a week," one Republican strategist said.
