Bush won't say if Rove offered to resign
Reuters News Service

WASHINGTON -- President Bush today sidestepped a question about whether his top adviser, Karl Rove, offered to resign over the leaking of a covert CIA operative's identity and said he would deal with the issue when an investigation into the case was over.

As controversy over the matter has heated up in recent weeks, the White House has refused to answer questions about Rove, who is credited with being the architect of the president's election victories.

Bush and his spokesmen cited the investigation into who told reporters about Valerie Plame two years ago after her husband, former diplomat Joseph Wilson, criticized the Bush administration's justification for going to war in Iraq.

"My answer really hasn't changed from 24 hours ago. It's the same answer," Bush said at a news conference with Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

3. The Prez is violating the Law.
The Prez is violating the Law.

Can anyone &/or group force him to obey the Law?

THE WHITE HOUSE OBLIGATIONS UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDER 12958

Under the executive order, the White House has an affirmative obligation to investigate and take remedial action separate and apart from any ongoing criminal investigation. The executive order specifically provides that when a breach occurs, each agency must "take appropriate and prompt corrective action." (see Reference, below) This includes a determination of whether individual employees improperly disseminated or obtained access to classified information.

The executive order further provides that sanctions for violations are not optional. The executive order expressly provides: "Officers and employees of the United States Government … shall be subject to appropriate sanctions if they knowingly, willfully, or negligently … disclose to unauthorized persons information properly classified."

There is no evidence that the White House complied with these requirements.

Reference:

Executive Order No. 12958, Classified National Security Information (as amended), sec. 4.1(a) (Mar. 28, 2003) (online at

www.archives.gov/isoo/policy_documents/executive_order_ 12958_amendment.html).

As of today, July 18, 2005, Mr Bush (and, apparently Mr Cheney in Libby's case) has violated Executive Order 12958 a total of 738 times. And, he has stated on national TV that he intends to continue violating Executive Order 12958 given that he claims he will do nothing until the independent investigation identifies a crime.

And, Mr Bush's continued violation of Executive Order 12958 is corroborated by his Press Secretary, Mr Scott McClellan in an exchange with a member of the press. Ms Hunt's question entails precisely Mr Bush's responsibility under Executive Order 12958, and Mr McClellan confirms that Mr Bush has not done what he should have done on July 14, 2003, if not sooner.

Mr Fitzgerald undoubtedly is familiar with Executive Order 12958.

7. Kerry: Rove lied to Bush or Bush is involved himself. WOOHOO!!!!
The most significant part of the article, imo.

>>>>>
Kerry said he would call this week for congressional hearings.

"The president should not wait to find out whether Rove is convicted in the end for his leak. Either Rove lied to the president about this matter of national security, which means he should be fired immediately, or the president is not being straight with the American people about his own involvement," Kerry said.

9. I was just going to suggest this myself
Dems should issue Bush an ultimatum.
Fire Rove, or face an impeachment hearing or congresional investigation himself.

They should give him one week to decide.
If he doesn't then that's his ass.

They don't need a majority to initiate an investigation, or even an impeachment hearing, they just need ONE member of Congress.
Don't believe that because Repubs are the majority, Bush doesn't have to worry about an investigation, which is what the MSM says.
One member of congress is all that's needed.

8. Incurious George
Can't be bothered to find out whether he's got a traitor in the White House, and is impervious to public opinion that demands he find out. Is THIS the behavior one might expect from a good Christian man? Or is it more the behavior you'd expect from a cynical, manipulative politician placing his own interests above that of the country and the constitution he swore to preserve, protect and defend?

Ball's in your court, self-righteous fundy types. Try not to twist yourselves into pretzels spinning your logic; you know how George gags on those.

11. GO KERRY!!!
Once the general public knows how corrupt these lying bastards are that are inhabiting the white house, and the heat is turned up in Ohio concerning Diebold bribing the election officials, it will just be a short hop to showing how fraudulent the 2004 election really was.

And THAT was Rove's baby, too.

12. New Bush Remarks On RoveGate During Presser With PM Howard

(IN REAL MEDIA VIDEO... slide the bar a couple of mms past midway. The question to bush follows a lot of burbling about terror from Howard.)

PRESIDENT BUSH: Caren.

Q Thank you, Mr. President. In light of the concerns that the CIA leak investigation is distracting from your agenda, has Mr. Rove or any of your aids offered their resignation? And what, short of a crime, constitutes a firing offense?

PRESIDENT BUSH: You know, I appreciate you bringing that up. My answer really hasn't changed -- (laughter) -- from 24 hours ago. It's the same answer. Now, I'll be glad to answer another question if you've got one. I -- I mean, I'll be glad to repeat what I said yesterday, which is, there's an ongoing investigation and people shouldn't jump to conclusions in the press until the investigation is over. And once the investigation is over, I'll deal with it.

Have you got another question? I don't want to shortchange you on a --

We can't react like they want us to re: SC nominee. That's exactly what they are looking for. We've got 5+ weeks to deal with this. We've got them on the ropes NOW!

Peace.

14. I just saw the clip on TV.
If you get a chance to see it (again), watch his facial color. He visibly gets redder as he answers. These questions are getting to him, and his lack of reasonable responses are so obvious.

15. Is interesting that he says he will repeat what he said yesterday,...
... and then doesn't do so. Instead he adopts the Mclellan phraseology... "ongoing blah blah"

I'd guess he has been told not to talk about firing for crimes. OTOH... he says he stands by what he said yesterday so I guess that still technically stands.
