Moderates cast doubt on court stalemate
President seeks 'timely, fair hearing' for Roberts in Senate

Thursday, July 21, 2005; Posted: 5:31 a.m. EDT (09:31 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's pick for the Supreme Court will make more courtesy calls on top lawmakers Thursday, with a key group of moderates casting doubt on the possibility of a stalemate in the Senate.

John Roberts, a judge on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, met Wednesday with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and other leading Republicans to discuss his confirmation hearings. He sat down with their Democratic counterparts later in the day.

"I appreciate and respect the constitutional role of the Senate in the appointment process, and I'm very grateful to the senators for accommodating me," Roberts said.

Among those meeting with Roberts on Thursday will be Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, who has voiced reservations about the nomination.

2. Of course we know that this guy is a terrible choice.
I was besieged with e-mails from every organization from MoveOn to NARAL to the ACLU as soon as his name was announced. Even my not-so-liberal Democratic senator, Chuck Schumer, isn't pleased with the pick. But he's going to sail right through. He's a decent, normal guy with nothing outrageous in his past. Bush* was smart. If he'd chosen somebody who'd belonged to the Klan, been accused of insider trading or sexual harassment, they'd have something to attack him on. But we've got practically nothing. Bush* picked the most innocuous Freeper that he could find.:-(
