Kerry Seeks Release of Roberts' Documents
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050722/ap_on_go_su_co/scotus_bush;_ylt=AhtfbPZ6Jclm3QQ7uINnX.ms0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3b2NibDltBHNlYwM3MTY-

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. John Kerry urged the White House on Friday to release "in their entirety" all documents and memos from Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' tenure in two Republican administrations.

"We cannot do our duty if either Judge Roberts or the Bush administration hides elements of his professional record," said the Massachusetts senator who was his party's presidential candidate last year.

Opening what is expected to be a broader attempt by Democrats to pry loose documents, Kerry issued his statement as Roberts made the latest in a series of courtesy calls on senators in advance of confirmation hearings.

The Reagan Library, in Simi Valley, Calif., holds an unknown number of documents relating to Roberts, arranged by subject matter. While material in some subjects are designated on the library's Web site as available to the public, most is not.

2. I know Kerry's doing his duty but
don't we all know that this is a done deal? It essentially over, right? Bush wanted a candidate that would overturn Roe. v. Wade and he got it? Right?

Why waste our time on this? We need to see to the problems that women will have in states that have no codification of Roe v. Wade.

It's over. Half of our population has had a constitionsl right stripped away from them.

3. Kerry knows it's lost, but
he's hoping to remind people of some of the shady things Bushco is involved in, and remind the public that Bushco is not being honest with the public by forcing him to refuse to release yet another round of documents.

4. Yeah precisely
and if these documents do for some chance get released, people will know whats up. Better to ask questions than just let Roberts sail through.

5. well, good luck
this is just a fart in the wind, but I guess a noble gesture, which is all we liberals are reduced to at this point.

Sorry to be so negatitive, but isn't this what we all expected?

10. Something is better than nothing isn't it?
Id rather the senate learn as much as they can about Roberts than just let him sail through. You never know what may come up during these things.

23. Remember Bolton?
There were many who thought that he was a "done deal" too... and everyday he is less and less likely to get confirmed.

Sometimes a victory isn't the reason you fight. Think of the schoolyard bullies who pick on you. You know they have you outnumbered and can kick your ass. But you fight them anyway. Why? To show you can, to (hopefully) strike a glancing blow that hurts them for a change, to show other people they can stand up to them too. And just because assholes deserve to be challenged from time to time.

7. It's going to be a long, hot five weeks between now and when
Congress reconvenes. A lot is going to happen between now and then, so don't count your chickens before they hatch. There are some very questionable things about Roberts past then just might come back to bite. him. Not to mention, that Treasongate is going to explode between now and then anyway. Roberts between hold back on buying that new desk set.

18. What's wrong with you?
That defeatist attitude is why we are in the shape we are in....and if you are not willing to fight for women's freedom, why don't you just keep you mouth shut? Because some of us are fighters and we don't need to hear your negative crap, OK?

Let us fight for our freedom while you go ...... Go fight for porn like another thread is....

If it had not been for Skinner who wrote an excellent post on fighting this SC nominee, I would be gone.....and maybe ya'll will regreat he wrote that post...but you have to realize something. Are the Democrats the party that supports freedom or not?

Excuse me, but I am supposed to stand up for Dem males right for to watch porn/pron while you sit on your lazy asses not defending legal and safe abortions? Maybe it's the porn/pron that the pugs are pissed off about...and they see that that is causing the abortions. Ever thought of that? We Pro-Choice Women are sick and tired of taking the blame....you and Bill Clinton have a lot of responsiblity for the losses of this party...LOTS of responsiblity.

And don't forget.....women are the backbone of this party....if you males won't fight, we will....so shut up and let us make our case....

21. Right on!!
Take nothing from the Bush Co. sitting down (let alone laying down ass up)!!! These M-F'rs are willing to let women and children suffer for their own power grab. They don't care and they are hurting us...BADLY!~! Kerry is doing the right thing and we ought to give him 100% of our support on this issue. Damn-it, we deserve to know everything we possibly can about Roberts. And just for the fact that he's labeled himself a "conservative" and "republican" is enough for me to know that he has faulty judgment. (why? because liberals are the true conservatives where it really counts...fiscal, environmental, jurisprudence, etc... and because the republican platform has NO ANSWERS for the real issues in this world...poverty, pollution, ethnic strife, war profiteering, oil dependency, education, etc; they only work on issues involving their personal pocket book and only with short-term forsight...idiots).

26. Hey, you are way out of line
In the first place I am not whoever you think I am. Not a male, not a porn defender. I have two daughters and three granddaughters. I have worked for reproductive rights for a combined total of 20 years in such organizations as the ACLU (Washington office at the time of the Hyde amendment and the ERA campaign), the national office of the League of Women Voters of the U.S. during the time the League was formulating its policy on reproductive rights using a concurrance process (I worked with local Leagues across the country. A prochoice policy was enacted in this process, which was the first time the League had such a national policy and stands today), a feminist women's health center that provided abortions here in New Haven (I raised one tenth of the center's budget from private sources)and during that time I helped to prevent a "Rescue" by Operation Rescue that was poised to invade us and chain themselves to abortion equipment, a common tactic of this group at that time. I just retired from Planned Parenthood of Connecticut where I raised approximately 3/4 of a million dollars each year for six years to support clinical services, including medical and surgical abortion, sexuality education and advocacy. In case you haven't noticed, CT is a beacon for reproductive rights, defeating legistlativeattempts at parental notification.

In short, I've worked for much of my professional life defending choice and I wouldn't have it any other way. So much for sitting on a lazy ass. Do you care to respond with your activities on behalf of reproductive rights over the past 20 years?

14. i agree 100% with Kerry! The American people need information
on this guy. I for one don't know what to make of him. This man could serve and make decisions for 30 years or more. That could seem like a very, very long time if an unknown entity is placed on the court.

24. The documents that Kerry seeks will disclose what Roberts really thinks
Roberts could no longer hide behind the sanctuary of "I was only representing the Administration's views."

Bush will fight like hell to prevent these documents from seeing the light of day.

A big clue also comes from the Feminists for Life that Mrs. Roberts founded. Her views of feminism are similar to that of an Opus Dei wife: women can only achieve their full potential by staying at home and being good wives and mothers.

It is bad enough we have 2 Opus Dei judges in the Supreme Court already, Scalia and Thomas, we don't need a third.

PS: In Clarence Thomas case, he converted to Catholicism after he joined the Supreme Court. His baptism was performed by an Opus Dei priest.
