Bush Urges Timely Confirmation of High Court Nominee Roberts
July 23 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush pushed today for a swift confirmation of his U.S. Supreme Court nominee, John G. Roberts Jr., urging the Senate to ``rise above partisanship.''

Bush, speaking in his weekly radio address, pointed to Roberts's experience arguing 39 cases before the Supreme Court and said he's been a ``fair-minded'' judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Roberts, as Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's replacement, would have the potential to shift the court's balance on abortion, affirmative action and church-state questions -- all issues on which O'Connor frequently was the swing vote. Bush urged the Senate to confirm Roberts before the high court reconvenes on Oct. 3.

Some Democratic senators say they're unsure of Roberts's legal philosophy on many issues, as he has served a little over two years on the federal bench. ``Many of his personal views are unknown,'' New York Democrat Charles Schumer told reporters on Capitol Hill this week. ``For these reasons it is vital that John Roberts answer a wide range of questions.''

2. I don't think he has the clout at this point to urge anything
Fortunately, it seems the American public are slowly catching on.

Who's going to put up a fight- much less actually try to stop him?

As if the public really cares. Only Dems think that way- Republicans- they play to win- and get great results (from their perspective) EVERY SINGLE TIME.

6. Its typical that he doesnt want or expect the senate to ask questions
Stupid asshole doesnt get this is part of what the senate does, it doesnt blindly confirm nominees just because of Bush's will, the senate has a duty and responsiblity to find out about the kind of people we're gonna be putting on the nation's highest court for life.

7. No reason to rush
Sandra Day O'Connor has said she will retire when her replacement is confirmed. It is not necessary to confirm before Oct. 3.
