ITHACA — An initial group of 58 people were arraigned Friday in Ithaca City Court on trespassing charges issued recently while they protested parking lot construction at Cornell University.
Over the course of four hours, the defendants appeared before Judge Judith Rossiter and each pleaded not guilty, according to city court clerk Adam Renslow.
Jane Marie Law, an associate professor of Asian religions at Cornell, approached the bench when her turn came and declared, “By reason of sanity, I am not guilty,” she recounted afterward.
Cornell University Police were still completing paperwork on Friday, but officials estimated earlier in the week that at least 90 trespassing citations had been issued at a campus site known as Redbud Woods, the interior of which contractors have since razed in order to build a 176-space parking lot.
