POSADA CASE

Posada used fake I.D. in 2000 trip

Luis Posada Carriles was in Miami five years ago posing as a Salvadoran traveler, U.S. officials have learned.

BY ALFONSO CHARDY AND OSCAR CORRAL

achardy@herald.com

Cuban exile militant Luis Posada Carriles used a false Salvadoran passport to fly to South Florida in the spring of 2000 -- about six months before using the same passport to travel to Panama, where he was arrested in connection with an alleged plot to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
(snip)

Posada, who escaped from a Venezuelan jail in 1985 and was freed from Panama after receiving a pardon, was taken into U.S. custody on May 17 after sneaking into South Florida this year. But the records filed in his deportation case in El Paso, Texas, raise questions about just how often the former CIA operative has visited America.

A travel record included as federal evidence against Posada shows he arrived at Miami International Airport on a flight from Central America on April 26, 2000 carrying a Salvadoran passport in the name of Franco Rodriguez Mena. Records submitted for the current immigration case show ''Rodriguez Mena'' traveled to Miami ostensibly to catch a connecting flight to another country. But the record does not show him leaving.

Moreover, a separate record, obtained by The Herald, shows Rodriguez Mena classified as a ''violator,'' suggesting that he might have slipped illegally out of a transit lounge at MIA.
(snip)

Posada's lawyers also objected to the inclusion of other Rodriguez Mena travel records which suggest that he might have flown to the United States on at least three other occasions -- in 1998, 1999 and once more in October 2000.

"How Authentic Journalists Caught an International Terrorist in Mexico
The Daily Por Esto! Found Posada Carriles on Isla Mujeres but George W. Bush Is Trying to Set Him Free in Miami

By Al Giordano
Special to The Narco News Bulletin

June 21, 2005

“He who protects a terrorist is a terrorist”

-George W. Bush"

a pretty picture :P

more background:

http://narcosphere.narconews.com/story/2005/6/24/213823/010

"Source 1: A former high-ranking DEA official

“If he was a CIA operative, and he was, I don’t think the CIA wanted him in custody,” the source says. “But he had the audacity to grant an interview with the Miami Herald, and he was arrested the day after that interview. … He did a stupid thing and rubbed it in the government’s face by coming into the U.S. illegally and then having the balls to grant an interview to the press in the middle of Miami.”
~snip~
Source 2: Another former high-ranking DEA official

"They put him in El Paso to bury him. They picked him up because they had no choice (after he went public) and they put him in El Paso, a small community that doesn't get much media attention."

He adds that the government "would have been content to let him wile away in the Cuban community, but now they have a political hot potato on their hands." The source adds that the Bush Administration is faced with the hypocrisy of its own stand on the war on terror."

4. So refreshing reading open writing on Posada. These links are GREAT.
The first link looks, overall, grim for Posada. I do think there is still a possiblity they might consider, as mentioned by one source, spiriting him out of El Paso. You may remember Posada Carriles actually boasted in his interview with the two reporters from the New York Times a few years ago that the Cuban American National Foundation sponsored an operation in which guards in the Venezuelan jail were bribed and he sneaked out wearing the clothing of a priest. This could easily be replayed, no doubt.

I relish the thought he'll just waste away in El Paso, however. Cool!

Thanks for the links. I plan on saving both of them.

Photos discovered in google images. The last one is a charity run in Havana.

8. you might find their reports on the non-violent revolution in bolivia
interesting.
I think there might be some important lessons for americans to learn from their experiences.
if i say local grassroots "leaderless" non-violent "people on the streets" mass movements for change am i saying to much?

6. Thanks JL Let's see
"once more in October 2000"...

and add to that

(one of many sources http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/oct2002/well-o29.shtml)

It is possible that there will emerge a credible explanation of the October 25 plane crash that killed Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia, and five others near Eveleth, Minnesota. Initial reports, however, are disturbing. None of the typical causes of a small plane accident—engine failure, icing, pilot error—appear to be involved.

This may not be that far out that the two are connected....

7. They stood to gain far more than they've acknowledged from his death.
Wellstone was in a hotly contested reelection campaign, but polls showed he was beginning to pull ahead of Republican nominee Norm Coleman, the former mayor of St. Paul, in the wake of the vote in the Senate to authorize President Bush to wage war against Iraq. The liberal Democrat was a well-publicized opponent of the war resolution, the only Senator in a tight race to vote against it.

More broadly, with the Senate controlled by the Democrats by a margin of 50-49, the loss of even a single seat could shift control to the Republicans. The immediate effect of Wellstone’s death is to deprive the Democrats of a majority in the lame-duck session scheduled for late November.
(snip/...)
Great article. Still feel so sick about this. He was a joy to see hard at work. He would have really made a difference, and he was dangerous to their deadly goals. If they can't get what they want legally, they DO CHEAT, don't they?

9. As I remember
There was a problem with the voting machines in Minn. Wellstone was too far ahead in the polls for the limited number of Touchscreens to move the number of votes needed to Coleman for a Repug win.

IMHO, there was TS/OptScan fraud. But they needed "close" races in states that had limited number of Touchscreen/Optscanner(that they could control the phyical media after the election). I believe Wellstone was killed so they could get a weaker Dem for a Coleman "win". Just IMHO...

12. Other freak plane crashes have benifited the Bush family too...
JFK, Jr. had a freak plane crash. Would have made an excellent presidental candidate a few years down the road.

Then there was the mysterious crash of a bunch of big Democratic contributers flying in a plane in Bosnia, where Ron Brown was killed. The right=wingers offered disinformation about the crash, saying that Clinton killed Brown because Brown had been such an embarassment to the Clinton administration...

Then there was the freak plane crash of Senator Mel Carnahan of Missouri...
