FORT LAUDERDALE - An art gallery has fired its director - not because she hung a graphic caricature involving President Bush, an Arab sheik and a barrel of oil but apparently, she says, because she talked about it on TV's ''The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.''
''I was blind-sided,'' Susan Buzzi said Friday, struggling for composure as she carried papers and photographs from a cluttered office at the Broward Art Guild. Until Wednesday, she was the Guild's executive director, and had worked with its gallery for more than 10 years.
Buzzi was at the Guild's helm when an exhibit titled ''Controversy'' sparked a firestorm of commentary, in particular over the suggestive work depicting President Bush. The painting, which like other artworks in the exhibit was selected for the gallery by an outside consultant, was sold following the May exhibit.
