CHICAGO -- Skyrocketing temperatures surpassed the 100-degree mark here for the first time in six years, prompting Chicago officials to implement an emergency response plan developed after hundreds of people died in a heat wave a decade ago....

Chicago's discomfort is part of a blazing heat wave that stretches across the upper Midwest and beyond. Sunday's high temperatures included 106 in Osage Beach, Mo., 102 degrees in St. Louis and 101 in Iowa City, Iowa. Omaha, Neb., peaked at 105 on Saturday....

The hot air moved in from the West, where 21 people, mostly homeless, have died from heat this summer in Arizona's Phoenix metro area. Some 200 cities and towns in the West hit daily record highs last week, including Las Vegas, Nev., at 117, and Death Valley soared to 129, the weather service said.

Demand for electricity to run air conditioners has hit near-record peaks from Southern California to the region served by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Excessive heat warnings and advisories were in effect through Monday for states from Illinois to Louisiana and from Nebraska to the District of Columbia, the weather service said. In the Florida Panhandle, meteorologists said a high of 94 combined with high humidity could make the heat index 114 Monday afternoon....

6. No heat wave here...

We're having seasonal weather here in the Pacific Northwest, so thoughts that this is a nationwide event are incorrect. Some of California's warm air will filter up this way later this week, but we're still in the 70's and 80's.

I totally believe that Global Warming is real, obviously, but sometimes a heat wave is just a heat wave. I send my thoughts to everyone who is suffering right now in the heat, as I cannot do heat.. .that's why I moved here.

August is usually the worst month here, but it's hard to anticipate, it seems like it's different every year. Ten years ago, my first summer in Missouri, most of August was above 100 degress, but it's never been that hot since then. Until now, that is.

yep, in the shade! (Although my sensor is kind of close to the house so it was probably a little high)...but it sure FELT like it was that hot.
There are large trees in distress from the heat & no rain for a month.

Normally, we have super low humidity though, and recently we're seeing an increase there as well. I go out to work in the garden for a few minutes, and I'm drenched in sweat.

14. Living in Michigan now, after spending 7 years in Florida

...and this entire summer has felt exactly like Florida. I've been up here 10 years and I've never seen it like this. Normally we are in the gorgeous 70s for much of the summer.

So we waited around all winter and this is the summer we get. Not fair!

Sheesh, you Yankees are hardy folks: down below zero in the winter, then a summer like this one. Merciful God. No wonder y'all won the War!:7

In fact, it's been better than many summers past. The heat index has gotten up there a few times, but so far no 100+ temps.

I tried to go to an auction today to pick up some merchandise but I couldn't stand it and left. Whatta wuss, I know. Damn I hope it cools down.
