US military chief urges more Americans to enlist in 'noble effort'
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The head of the US armed forces, which face a sharp decline in new recruitment, called for more Americans to enlist in the military to defend their country from the dangers of global extremism.

General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, called recruitment "a national issue" at a press conference in Washington.

More than two years after the US invasion of Iraq, the military is comfortable with its record of retaining currently active and reserve soldiers, who total 2.4 million.

But recruiting new soldiers for what Myers called "very noble work" is a real problem for the Pentagon and the country, he said.

7. The "noble effort" is to teach your kids to resist.
Educate them about illegal and immoral wars. Teach them about the hazards of depleted uranium, and what it means to their future. Be sure to tell them that fully 1/3 of the Gulf War I veterans are permanently disabled. And explain to them why we invaded and occupied Iraq.

9. To General Myers:
I have 3 teenage boys. They're the kind you and your recruiters would drool over. They will NEVER serve in your army.

Not for a war over oil interests. If it was national security, that's one thing.

But for Halliburton's Quarterly earnings statement: NO.

19. Is it noble to support a lie? Or the freedom of corporations...?
You know. The freedom to get tax cuts but increased "subsidies". The freedom to offshore your jobs? The freedom to exploit? The freedom to bypass laws?

I would rather find REAL noble work than support a facade.

When the US is invaded, I'll help my fellow man. But I will not die for corporate oil or bushie vengeance.

21. Myers should speak to pols that supported this & get their kids - first!
Again, the military and political management of this being so poor from the DoD that they are not getting that the American people see their sons and daughters without proper equipment (for really long periods of time), no bid contracts, military and political leadership that blames lower level troops for military fiascos, et al.

People will patriotically join when they have leadership that can be trusted.

26. The world has become much more dangerous
because of the illegal invasion of Iraq. I consider nothing about duping our kids into believing that enabling a dry drunk chickenhawk's effort to enrich himself and his cronies as noble.

Noble would be fostering true efforts to eradicate world poverty, making sure that all have access to adequate health care, and educations. Just think what good could be done by pulling out of Iraq, and spending the money instead on repairing the damage we've done, getting Halliburton and the rest of the war profiteers out, and letting Iraqis provide the labor themselves.

Employment and a cease in the constant warfare would go a long way toward keeping people from becoming suicide bombers. Give people hope, not death and destruction. We are creating more terrorists than we can ever be able to control. Our kids need not sacrifice themselves any longer for Iraq's oil.

Killing woman and children from 30,000 feet

Gunships firing on a wedding

35. Even if the Bush twins started patrolling Fallujah on foot . . .
it still wouldn't be a noble effort. There is no nobility in stealing two elections and falsely claiming a mandate, laying the groundwork for a police state under the pretext of an endless war on terrorism, accusing opponents of tax giveaways to the rich and powerful of class warfare, lying to the public about the reasons behind an illegal war of aggression and an illegal occupation, and covering up the dirty work that led to the MSM propaganda campaign for it.

In short, there is no nobility in serving a government that violates its pledge to uphold and defend the Constitution and the republic from all enemies foreign and domestic. And that may be because the country's greatest enemies are among those who make that very pledge. The noble effort, then, is to vigorously expose the crimes of the government and to work just as vigorously to hold criminal officials accountable, replace them with worthier people, and do whatever needs to be done to ensure that such crimes can never happen again.
