In Baghdad quarter, killers don't hide their faces
<snip>

Hit squads roam freely in the mixed Sunni and Shi'ite western district of Baghdad, killing ordinary Iraqis in a campaign government officials fear will spark civil war.

"Most of the murdered ones are simple people with no obvious political activities that can justify the killing," said Abu Sami, 43, an employee in the Ministry of Finance.

"We as a family think that we might be targeted so I really think of leaving for another place. But I can't afford it so I have to live in the middle of chaos."

Murder comes easily in Amiriya and many other parts of Iraq, despite security crackdowns, government promises to end violence and the presence of 140,000 U.S. troops.

Gunmen believed to be Sunni insurgents have terrified Amiriya's neighborhoods with numerous killings, mostly of Shi'ites, over the last three months.

5. This area of Baghdad probably isn't on their itinerary
The insurgents here really seem to be throwing a hell of a last throe.

4. "Gunmen believed to be Sunni insurgents"
Believed by whom? And on what evidence?

My bets would be on the "interim government", whose best shot at survival at this point is a Civil War. The "Sunni Resistance" has every reason to avoid that.

Any case, this piece is propaganda, fear-mongering.
