WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate approved a bill Tuesday to raise the homeland security secretary from last to eighth place in the presidential line of succession, just after the attorney general.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, passed without objection just before the chamber adjourned. The companion House bill, sponsored by Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., is pending before the Judiciary and Government Reform committees.

The ONLY line of succession after the VP and Sec of State should come from the house or senate. They did that to block any chance a Dem could succeed Bush after the whole bunch get thrown in the clink.

Frankly, it's more than a little scary. If I'm in the list of the first seven, I think I get edgy. Why would this be important? Why does this deserve legislative endorsement? Is someone thinking ahead....?

Succession is considered at the highest levels, and the consideration extends to possible scenarios even a died-in-the-wool conspiracy theorist would balk at.

"Let's see, what if the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, the President-pro-tem of the Senate, the Secretaries of State, Defense, aand Treasury, along with the Attorney General, were all-of-the-sudden unable (read: dead) to serve---Who would we call on next?

"Shit, this guy Chertoff seems like the perfect candidate to lead the nation out of such a crisis!!!!

"Fuck all of the other cabinte members who've already been approved by a Congress that considered the line-of-succession when they approved--these are challenging times, and they call for the leadership of Chertoff!!!!"
